My suggestion would be CD&T. That is Clostridium perfringins type C&D and Tetanus. That is the only vaccine I give my goats but it is a painful death if the goats get these diseases.
I would probably snatch up that buck too. Keep him in a stall. Something that you can get a hold of him but don't be grabbing him. Just spend a lot of time with him. You don't have to bottle feed to have a friendly goat. Just spending lots of time with them can also make them friendly.
If he is only use to nursing and pasture he may be harder to transition than you are hoping, is he used to grain? The grain would give him the protein and energy to help with the transition to your farm. If he is on grain buy some from the farmer to help with the transition.
The basic vaccination is CD&T
And wait to castrate until at least 12 weeks to prevent Urinary Calculi.
when feeding a whether grain, like corn, you need to be careful because the phosphorus to calcium ratio is too high and this can also cause UC(Urinary Calculil)
CD &T can be purchased at just about any feed store. pretty cheap, just need a syringe and needle to go with it.
2cc given sub-Q in the neck or back leg is fine.
booster in 21 days and then once a year after that, Some people give a 2nd booster another 21 days later, making it a total of 2 shots in the beginning.
As far trying to get it done before castrating, I think you should be fine with giving the first at shot at 9 weeks and then the 2nd shot at 12 weeks and castrating. We normally get our vaccinating done a little earlier than that before we band, but I realize you have less time with him.
I recommend unless you are a phophorus to calcium expert to give him a goat specific pelleted grain with Ammonia chloride in the feed.
He will get very lonely by himself, even a pen opened up next to a calf would give him company, our show heifer loves being with the goats, but you have to watch out for a cow being too agressive to a very young kid.
Some friends of mine recently wanted to wait until all 3 of their bucklings could be done. The oldest was 7 wks older than the others.
We went when the little guys were 8 wks old and it went fine, but the older guy's nuggets would NOT fit in my bander, they had to buy a bigger one.
I agree, for 'grain', use a goat / buck specific grain ration that has AC added to prevent UC. I like "Noble Goat" from TSC for my boys.
Tetanus is a slow, painful, nasty way for a goat to die. I would imagine enterotoxemia is as well...but I've seen tetanus... CD&T will prevent both.
TSC has 2 kinds (our store does, anyway...) : Goat Vac (10 doses) and Bar Vac (25 doses). Exact same thing, just different sized bottles. For your little herd, I'd get the goat vac.
You can do the 2 (or 3 ) boys and then boost in 3 wks and toss the rest and buy a new bottle yearly.
Keep the new guy penned up and spend some time loving on him...let him see the other boys take treats / loving from you. He should come around if you have the time to gentle him.
If you don't, pass on him, b/c there's nothing worse than chasing down a goat that's scared of you regularly to trim hooves / vaccinate / etc.
And I've seen 'freaked out' goats make my tame ones revert to wild behavior...it's a goat thing....
Monkey see, monkey do...er...goatie see, goatie do.
Many of ours are not tamed, that is good advice from roll. we are very very used to livestock, and we set up special areas in the barn that they have been trained to come into with grain, and then we slowly move them into a small confined area to catch them.
when we bring our show lambs home they are near 100lbs and very wild, we set up a corner swing gate in there pen(15x15) and slowly move the animal around to that corner and then pull the gate over so they are squeezed into the corner. That way my kids can catch them, with out running them around and enjurig the animal or themselves.
But I agree with Roll, if you aren't wanting him to be wild, you will need a lot time with him. You wouldn't beable to tell some of our show goats had ever been handled for the first year of their life, Once they are with the herd they are just as hard to catch as the animals that had never been showed.
Sorry I didn't remember Spider, I have to really work at names. It isn't one of my stronger attributes.
