 O.K. Getting ready to vaccinate. 5 way, WNV, and rabies. Do all at once? Not comfortable with this idea. Saw a friends horse go down one year when the vet gave her horse all of it's shots the same day. His immune system became compromised and he contracted leeches or Pythiosis a month later. Both this horse and it's pasture mate were in the same pond but only my friends horse contracted the bacteria. Now, I'm scared to give all the shots at once. Any information on this??

We usually give all shots at once, but if you're going to space them out make sure it's at LEAST a month between vaccines or else the horses may not have the proper immune reaction.

We have seen a number of bad reactions ranging from colic to founder,
when all the shots are given at one time. Not all animals, but it DOES
happen. If you are giving your own vaccinations, I would recommend
one each week.

Are these boosters or are you starting their vaccination program? Everything
except Rabies, needs two shots, usually 4-6 weeks apart, to get the protection
going.

Folks having the Vet give the shots, usually get them at one time to save
the cost of visits. It is easy to give shots, practice with an orange and
someone who knows how to give shots.

We do our own shots, saves money for us with several animals. Plus we can
give the shots when we please, space them out for safety. We have seen
some bad reactions in animals that previously had no problems with the
"all at once" method. That year, body didn't tolerate all those meds well,
with mild to severe reactions to the shots.

We can do a shot a week, so we go for "better safe, than sorry" with the
booster shot program. Our Vet had no remarks about needing to go
monthly, between vaccinations. Said weekly was enough time apart. And
with about 5 shots, monthly wouldn't get them done until Sept.!!
