One of the baby goats got killed yesterday by a bobcat!! Today one of the "goat ladies" (there are four of us) put up a very strong portable corral in the goat pen. So, now we will put them in that at night, since the bobcat comes at dawn to do his/her hunting.

The owner of the goats is visiting a friend in New Mexico, she took the older goats with her. Leaving the four youngest goats that would only need to be fed and watered once a day. This is the first time in three years that a preditor has come around. Probably since the adult goats were gone, the babies were easy to get.

It is very sad, that Fern was killed, she was such a friendly little thing!

Funny, Maggie( the one building the new pen) said Sunday she was awakened with the feeling something was wrong at the goat pen, threw on dirty clothes, just got in the car and took off... When she got there, the kids were by the gate not making a sound, which was very strange, usually when they hear anyone pull up they start calling to us. Then, she noticed one is missing, when she went around the corner of the milking shed, there was a Bobcat on top of Fern, she was just barely alive, and died in Maggie's arms. Oh so sad.!!

Here was my last photo of Fern. Giving my friend's grandson a hug!!

So sorry about your loss. Sadly, farming seems to be full of such loss. I always tell my kids that although it hurts to loose the things we love, look at all the things we get to enjoy and love. That without this risk of hurt, our lives would be limited.

Livestock Guardian Dogs might be able to help you with your predator problem. Wish you luck. Hope your children are not to hurt.
