Well my first litter of kits are all sold. We had six that were born on Nov 5th. I found that I was too picky about who they ended up with. Is this normal? I hate for them to go to bad homes where I felt they won't be taken care of up to my standards. Is this normal or does it wear off as time goes? I don't think I have it in me to breed them again the in the spring...

I have never sold any of our animals, though we did try to sell our goats once but it fell through but that was ok b/c we were just too attached after all, LOL. I would be picky too, when you put so much time, effort, money and emotion into raising an animal you do want the best care for them especially knowing that there are those who wouldn't take good care of their pets. If you do try again, maybe it won't be so bad? ;)

I'm still fairly picky about where my goats go. It has gotten easier over time with my chicks/poults though.

Wear off as time goes? No, I hope not! Your feeling of wanting to give them good homes is EXCELLENT, and I wish more breeders felt that way. [A lot do, of course, but a lot don't care.]

If anything, for me it gets harder and harder to sell them and feel confident they're going to a good place. You end up screening customers, but it's for the best.

I'm going to find out if I can be a breeder. I told DH I will go slow at first just to see if I can let the bunnies go. lol. I bet it is hard after watching them being born, caring for Mom and kits, watching their eyes open, seeing them grow. I would think it will be hard to see them go and worry that you picked the right person. But you have to do it, if you plan to breed.

We shall see. Only time will tell.

Sadly, you may think you got the right person, and then they disappoint you. A few years ago, I let one of my breeding does go to what I thought was an excellent home. This doe had many positive features, but she had a DQ that it wasn't wise to keep in the gene pool. I bred her once and then decided to let her go. She had such an outstanding personality, I wanted to be sure she went to a loving home. I was shocked when I met this same doe about a year later in the hands of a local rabbit rescue. She had been running loose and had a litter after she was picked up (obviously, she wasn't the only loose rabbit!). You do your best for them, but you have to accept the fact that, once they leave your hands, you really have no control over what happens to them.

This is to my way of thinking, the very heart of breeding, raising, selling any animal. Makes no difference if it is dog, cat, rabbit, goat or chicken. Key words being "You do your best for them". You really cannot do any more than your best.

The best part this time around is that all the bunnies went to people I know! There were still a few people that inquired about the kits but I didn't feel comfortable knowing their past history with animals. I told everyone that if for some reason it doesn't work out I will take them back and re-home them! I don't want them to feel they have to release them into the wild or take them to the animal shelter. I hope they take me seriously because as Bunnylady said people will disappoint me sooner or later. We shall see. Maybe I will breed them another time and see how it goes this time around. The first time I would think would the the hardest for anyone.

Well look at that. I just got a message from one of the girls who took two saying her cats won't leave the bunnies alone and she is going to post them on her facebook page to see if someone wants them. Darnit!! I think I will offer to rehome them myself!
