Ok, stupid question here, but what are the main differences between alpacas and llamas? They both look the same to me. :hu

Llamas are about twice the size of alpacas. Llamas fiber drapes over the body with basically no crimp and no locks and alpacas have either a very crimpy fleece or a draping fleece that is like dredgelocks. Llama ears are banana shaped and alpaca ears are straight. Their personalities are different too.

Which one would have the softest fur and be more suitable for a pet? ( Not really expecting either to be all sweet and cuddley, just temperment wise)

In general, alpacas have "better" fiber although it all depends on what you want in your fiber.

In my opinion, llamas have a better personality. Keep in mind that, in South America, llamas were raised as working animals and the alpaca could be compared to sheep. In other words, llamas have been bred for years to work with humans whereas alpacas were rounded up for shearing, but not much else.
