When do hooves need to be trimmed?

Our pot-bellied pig Patrick is a year old now. I know he will need to have his hooves trimmed. When will this need to be done? Anyone have suggestions on how best to go about doing this?

It is easiest to keep on top of them rather than waiting on them to overgrow. Time in between depends on the pig and the environment that they are in.
