Ridin' The Range
Last night hubby and I got home from work after dark. As soon as we got out of the Jeep, our heifer started bellowing. Hubby said, "well Reba's mad at us. She must think we were going to forget to feed her." As we walked closer to the barn, we could see that Stew, our largest steer was not with the others. Stew is the one that when we first got him used to escape and go for long walks in the woods. We couldn't even fathom that he would do this after such a long time of staying in "his yard". My second thought however was that someone had shot him or that somehow the coyotes had got him. As my hubby grabbed the spotlight and started scanning the field, I started calling for Stew. The other cows standing next to me for moral support. Called a few more times and then, "Mooooo"! I said, "Honey, he's on the other side of the barn". Meaning he would have been on the wrong side of the electric fence. My hubby turned toward me and shined the light towards me and the barn and said, "No....he's in the hen house!" Well...low and behold, Stew had pushed through the gate that leads to the hen house and then must have been rubbing his head on the coop door. Pushed up the latch on accident and in through the man door he went! However...once in, he couldn't get back out because the door doesn't swing that way. So instead, he stayed in the hen house enjoying about 20 pounds of layer pellets! I'm not sure how long he had been in there, but the chickens had all come in and roosted for the night and looked no worse for the wear.
