Hello Not sure if this is the spot to post? I would like to have a person to person chat about goats . Face to face. So the question is where to I find goat people in my area to talk to? I found a lot of my answers here but still have a poop load of questions. I live 30 miles south of boston. There was a fair this summer close by and I tried to ask a few things and to my surprise they were not too freindly. It was really crowed so I mite of caught them at the wrong time. I dont have goats yet still thinking about it. Would like to get 2 someday but want to be ready for them when I get them. Thats why it would be great to find someone in my area that has goats or a goat to talk to if the timing is right. Thanks Scotty :D

I would look online at websites like American Goat Society or American Dairy Goat Society. If there is a specific goat you like, look that up and see if there is a Goat Society for that. They usually have a list of members and you can find ones in your area. That is how I found goat farms in my area. Even look up goats for sale on the internet. Good luck with your search.

Also try the county Agricultural Extension offices -sponsored by state universities. They would have contacts for you. Or the local 4H center-- especially if you have children ages 8-19.

talk to people at a feed store and at the vets. they send people my way all the time. Or if you have a radio show that takes calls, get on there and ask for others--we have the Trading Post that is on one of our local radio stations. Sometimes it takes a bit to get on, but it works. :)

Get the four-legged ones.

I think you have to decide exactly what you want goats for. If you only want them for eating brush and clearing out an area, that is different than possibly wanting milk someday. I really don't know much about it. I just bought Nigerian Dwarf goats because I eventually want milk. That was my end result of what I wanted goats for. Yes they are eating my pasture but it is obvious that we will be mowing that pasture along with the alpaca pastures that we already have to mow. Nigerian Dwarfs are definitely browsers. They don't eat everything in the pasture. So I would say take Nigerian Dwarfs off of your list. Can't help you with any other type.

It wasn't a dumb question...I was just being a smarty pants. :p

Wooded areas with lots of brush should be fine habitat for almost any goat.. What I should have said was that you're in a good position to be able to choose pretty much any goat you'd like to have. If you want milk, get dairy breeds...if you want meat, get meat breeds. If you want a little milk and some good market kids, maybe you want crossbred does and a meat buck. Point being, it sounds to me like whatever goats you choose should do well in the environment you've got to offer.

For what it's worth, I'd have to say that our Nubians tend to prefer browse over grazing and walk straight through a field of nice tall grass to congregate around a scrubby little osage orange sapling, whereas the Boers seem quite content to put their nose down and graze along more like cattle..

But...that could just be our goats, and I wouldn't necessarily take it to be indicative of the breeds. "Actual mileage may vary," in other words.
