Wasn't sure whether this belonged here or in the breeds forum so I'm taking my best guess.

I want to start raising meat rabbits. My hutch is ready but I can't find the rabbits I want. I've checked Craig's List and every rabbit 'board' I could find (arba.net, therabbitrycenter.com, rabbitbreeders.us, breeders.homesteadrabbits.com, etc., most of which have listings that are hopelessly out of date) and I'm not finding a 'reliable' source for purebred rabbits with as much genetic diversity as possible.

The hiccup is I don't/WON'T do Fakebook. That might be the best source of this kind of information but they'll have to get along without me.

Initially I'm looking for Californian Whites, a buck and two does, as unrelated as possible. Located most anywhere in the Mid-South.

Craig's List turned up a couple or three people selling single rabbits but it's not practical for me to drive to three different locations, each a six to eight hour drive, one-way, in order to get three rabbits.

I've found one ARBA-listed breeder in Georgia, but I can't get any information from him. I've sent emails asking specific questions about age, genetic diversity, price, etc., but all he says in reply to my emails is, "Yes, I have rabbits," and "Prices vary."

Craig's List shows one breeder (who I haven't contacted) in Halls, Tennessee (near Knoxville) selling multiples but he only has one Californian breeding pair. I might use him for a backstop but I was hoping to find someone running multiple separate bloodlines.

I did a lot of reading on the subject before I got into this and somehow I got the impression that New Zealands and Californians would be as common as a haircut, so it baffles me I'm having such a hard time finding Californians.

Anybody know of a reliable source?

You might need to go to ARBA shows to find breeders. I raised Satins many years ago and after buying my first rabbit, after that I bought from breeders that I met at shows.

Go on the ARBA website and look for shows in your area. The winter show season will be winding down and unless clubs can find air conditioned facilities for shows they will not hold any in the hot summer months. Rabbits are very susceptible to heat.
