I just purchased my first registered Boer goat. He is registered Purebred with the IBGA. I run primarily a market herd but am slowly aquireing a few registered goats.

I only want to join one registry, what the advantages and disadvantages between IBGA, ABGA and USBGA?

I'm in both the ABGA and the USBGA, the IbGA is run by the USBGA...I am registering all my new kids in the USBGA, nothing in the ABGA except animals already registered with them. The USBGA is cheaper to register animals. Besides the fact that they are slightly more critical of potenetial "registered stock"...Call the USBGA....Annette will probably answer the phone, she is like the National Director or something. She will answer all your questions and what she says GOES...When I call the ABGA, if I get anything but a voice mail, answers aren't always so forth coming. When I register kids or transfer animals, I have new paperwork within a few weeks...Not so with the ABGA, more like months...Alot of show people are ABGA ONLY and some shows frown on your USBGA papers...but for the producer/breeder I think the USBGA is the best bet...AGAIN JMO...Check it out yourself...I don't like 4 teated bucks....the ABGA essentially over-looks this fact at the visual conformation stage...Enough Said

According to the breed standards of all three associations they all accept four teats on bucks.

jodief100,

I would recommend you check around to see which registry is the most popular in your area. This will be especially important when you're trying to sell goats.
You might also keep in mind that on January 1, 2011 the ABGA will no longer accept any other associations registration papers. If a goat is ABGA registered you can dual register with other associations but not the other way around.
I belong to both the ABGA and IBGA because I show and these are the only associations that have shows in my area.

All of the associations ACCEPT 4 teats....doesn't mean they "like" them...I've spoken to Annette about that issue, and came away from it with the understanding that, as a long-time dairy goat judge before Boer Goats were even in the US, she shares my dislike for extra teats.

However....there are so many people out there breeding any buck to any doe just for 'papers' sake that to disqualify 4 teats would be nearly impossible.

I like the USBGA best for the same reasons stated by Relics, and...ABGA people I've dealt with weren't as friendly or helpful....sorta uppity, if you will.

BUT...there are folks here in IN who prefer not to deal w/ USBGA b/c they don't sanction as many shows locally as ABGA does.

If you're purely wanting to join an association for the benefits / purpose of saying your goats are registered, I highly recommend USBGA.

If you're going to show, you'd better check with other breeders and see what association they'd recommend.
