That's what I use for them in our goats...3x the label dose for 3 days.

Question: If you get the safeguard for sheep or horses you need to dose at 3x the recommended; but doesn't safeguard now come labelled for goats and with the dose listed as correct for goats? I've been meaning to double check this at the feed store but haven't been in a while. I was checking it out on Jeffers website when it crashed.

And I think she's asking about treating sheep, not goats...would you still say give 3x? (this is a sincere question, not trying to sound nit-picky!)

Safeguard does come labeled for sheep and goats. Most producers give it to goats at 3x the label dose because it's one of the dewormers that has become slightly less effective over time. It's a got a very high safety margin, so it's ok. And yes, I 3x the dose even on the one specifically labeled for goats.

If you look at the OP, you'll notice that it was said
and slightly younger goat?
I don't know if sheep producers also 3x the dose on their sheep...but I believe that the tapeworm that affects goats is the same tapeworm that affects sheep...so again, I would 3x the dose for sheep as well.

You should always check with your vet and / or the producers that are in your area to find out what the resistance factor is like in your area before administering dewormers. Some may not work in your area at all because of a high resistance build up. And under dosing at a rate that doesn't work only makes resistance worse.

Safeguard will take care of tapeworm...and safe. I give it to my pregnant goats. And I agree with Elevan on the dose. Thats pretty much what I do too.

Oh yuck! I just looked at a picture of tapeworms in sheep feces on Sheep 201. They are saying benzimidazoles class Anthelmintics work on sheep. I don't know about goats. They say TBZ, Panacur, SafeGuard, Valbazen and Synanthic are all benzimidazoles trade brands with the respective ingredients, Thiabendazole, Benbendazole, Albendazale and Oxtendazole.

Although I have never seen tapeworms in our sheep, we only worm when we suspect Bottle Jaw and we alternate between SafeGuard pellets for Beef and Dairy cattle and Ivermecton 1% orally. As for the doses, I would have to ask my DH. Math is not my thing . . . unless it has to be. It is always better for me to cheat and ask my DH.

On a side note, when my daughter brought home her rescue Boston Terrier the Petsmart vet in the city where she got him said he was worm free. Days later he pooped out solid poops of tapeworms; no fecal material at all. Had I not seen it myself, I would have never believed this could happen.
