How many of you have wood floors for you rabbits? I'm thinking of having one in the hutch and covering it with hay/straw. Will the rabbits chew it/do yours?

I know this isn't what you meant, but I cut a large piece of wood to go inside the wire-bottomed cage so that mine could get off the wire. They did chew on them initially, but now only one doe does. However, mine are able to get their teeth into it all around, and you could more easily protect a wooden floor. Mine also have other wood to chew on, which is my guess of why they don't generally chew their resting pads or nest boxes much.

I'd think the real issue would be cleanliness. Unless you're going to litter-train them, I don't see how you can keep a wooden floor clean? My pads generally stay in the cage center, or at least I keep them out of the corners where the rabbits seem to go. Even so, they get a little messy, especially with nursing kits. I'd think you'd have to remove the rabbit from the cage and scrub it daily with an all-wood floor. Or at least every few days if you use a LOT of bedding, which would mean a buildup of ammonia, feces, etc in the cage with the rabbit. And the regular cleaning would probably damage the wood more than chewing.

You could try a divided cage with a sleeping section. However -- if I tried that with mine, they'd probably just use the sleeping area for a toilet. My does think that's what a nest box is, as soon as the kits start hanging out outside of it.
