If the setting hen hears no development she will toss that non fertile out. Then any hen -- often the broody -- will consume. Of course, hens will fight over shells! When I boil eggs, I toss the crushed shells and they scrambled, grab & run with pieces. Penning here during day is fine but others will need a nest. Hmmm 🤫

The chicks that I was going to pick up at the swap didn't work out. There were LOTS of Breese there & I got several contacts, but didn't bring any home.
Some shocking news from my coop. The broody girl is sitting on 8 eggs & there are the remains of shells outside of the coop building! 😱 I think one of the other hens may have stolen & eaten the eggs/chicks!!!! 😡😠 🍗 If I needed any inspiration the get rid of these old hens... that's enough to do it.
There's only a few days left until hatch day. Starting in the morning I'll be booting everyone out of the building & locking broody in with food & water until night. I assume the nest is safe while the rest have gone to roost (?)
Well double bummer - you didn't get any at the swap (and exercised too much restraint!) and you may have a chick-egg-eater. ARGHHHH!!!
🤞for the remaining eggs.

Here's hoping for a successful hatch of the remaining eggs, and that the chicks stay safe under the broody's care.
