I am frustrated with this first time doe that will not take care of her babies. Most of the first time moms I've had fail, do so because they have babies on the wire and they get too cold. If I am able to find the babies in time and get them in a nest box, the momma does what she is supposed to...
I would think that there are just too many times that could be the fault of heat. It sounds like only 2 breedings that should be counted. The one with the litter and the one with the 1 kit. I would make a decision based on how she does with this breeding but I would make this breeding her last...
We've had problem here in Texas too. All of does missed the first breeding of the fall and most of them missed the second breeding. Out of 7, I had 2 that actually bred. I hope they are all bred now.
My favored buck is also a flemish cross. I keep saying I am going to retire him and move toward the smaller boned bucks but time and again, I just keep going back to him because he throws such good, strong, healthy, meaty babies that are not too big boned. His babies, always put the purebreds...
The best advice I have heard regarding buying your brood stock is to get 1 proven doe that is already bred and 1 or 2 jr does and a junior buck that is unrelated. That gives you the best starting of having babies soon, and raising your stock up for temperament.
Just fyi, Bunny faces do molt. Some of them will lose the hair on their face before the new hair grows back. It happens. You may be dealing with a dominance issue here but just know the face molt can happen.
Yep. Practice, practice, practice. I had an inexperienced buck too and I was afraid we was going to be a breeding dud because all my other bucks hit sexual maturity running but this one was a little slow out of the gate. He seemed confused and would back down if a doe balked at the prospect of...
I paid $25 for my champagne and he was a pet quality because he didn't silver out right for show.
Rabbits are hard to come by around here and after this terrible summer, and trying to keep my rabbits alive, I know why.
I sell my meat mutts for $10 ranging from 8-12 weeks. $15 if they are...
I agree. that's one reason I put "animal lover" in quotes. I hate the idea that someone "loves" animals so much they can't kill their own. They buy them from the store instead. It's not because they love animals so much, it's because they love for someone else to be accountable for the killing...
No. I wasn't saying she is thin, she looks fine to me. I was just thinking, given where you got her from, she would probably benefit from having some good care. She will probably begin to look even better than she does now. And, btw, I think she is very pretty. Certainly worth the $9!
The reason the "animal lover mindset" as you refer to it is so common is because people in our society are so far removed from reality when it comes to our food. These days the work involved in eating means, driving to the store and picking out something that looks appetizing.
There are so...
First, congrats on your rabbit. For $9 what have you got to loose? she is beautiful! There is nothing wrong with getting her even without know anything about her. It's a chance and it's now. Sometimes, that works out very well especially if you are wanting it for personal meat use.
And if it...
Congrats on your babies. You really can't tell at that age if they are boys are girls. I hope they all do well and survive. Keep an eye on the box. I used a cardboard box in a pinch and the momma accidentally dumped the whole think over by putting too much weight on the side when trying to jump in.
Those are scent glands. It's totally normal and all female rabbits have them. Male rabbits have them too but because the testicles are located there, most people expect to see it on a buck. A lot people are surprised to see it on a doe.
The two times that I have had truly nervous does that wouldn't breed, I put the buck in the cage with her and left him for about a week. The scuffle a little at first but with in a couple of days, you can tell she is happy to have a familiar face in her cage to cuddle against. Both times, it...
My satins are proving, to me at least, to be very frugal with their food. They only eat little more than half as much as my nz crosses and the satins seem to be pretty big meat rabbits. I don't have experience raising baby satins yet. I got the adults at the beginning of the summer and it has...
