We can't wait to see the new arrivals from both of you!

    Closing Hayloft Door

Our front barn is the same age as our house, 102 years old. It is a different style and we have swing to the side as opposed to the swing down loft doors. A neighbor who has your style and even with an active pulley system I wouldn't want to have to open and close it regularly.

Put a deposit down on two Nigerian Dwarf goats! Need to get ready for them...

I agree about the wound wire as opposed to welded wire fence. We had to replace a mess of the welded left over from the previous owner of our property. I'm not so sure though about the height recommendation. We started out with 4 foot fencing and it was fine even for our Nubians. What it...

    Scours, again?!

Our vet and the man who has been our mentor for years has us using a mix similar to what you switched to. We have had our bottle babies on it for two breeding seasons when we didn't have enough milk from our does to cover all the babies. We do a mix of whole milk, whole butter milk and...

    Pet playgrounds fencing?

The bottom 1/3 should be OK but I'd be concerned about the poly mesh for the top 2/3. Also with this fencing you are paying for the no dig flare at the bottom that you shouldn't need for your goats. We used a poly mesh as a quick, cheap fix last spring when we had a tree fall and take out about...

    The mystery of Bonnie

Welcome to the insanity of goat ownership. I was the same way last year waiting for our first kids to be born. Each doe was different. We even have twin sisters who bred the same day that were different from each other. One gave birth 2 weeks early to 3 does and the other was almost a week...

    Introduction I'm a new farmer

We knew she was in trouble but our vet said he couldn't find anything causing it other than just old age. She has always tested negative on all tests. She was 13 and hadn't been fed properly by her previous owner that just used her as a kid mill. Luckily for us we still have her full sister...

    Introduction I'm a new farmer

We lost our oldest doe over the weekend. She never really recovered from delivering her two BIG kids this last spring, never putting the weigh back on post delivery. She and her sister were rescues that we had not planned to breed as they were so under weight. Daphne had other ideas and...

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

Coyotes are a problem in our area. The county is trying to trim down a pack that at last count had 2 dozen members. Hearing them call in the evening can be a little scary.

LOL I love your way of defining the weather but type of clothing! We typically only get a hand full of the most extreme here by your definition. For me top end is thermals under hoodie under waterproof outer shell with lining zipped inside.

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

We had rain starting yesterday and are supposed to have it daily for a week. Our grass is bright green again. That makes a great color background for our fall color change.

Will Goats Roam Back to Neighbor's House?

I wouldn't trust them to know home particularly during hunting season. Our goats are master escape artists. If they get out of their pasture on one side they come around the barn to the yard. Getting them back in is as easy as opening the gate and letting our dog out to bark at them, they...

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

We have a hard blade Stihl Weedeater that lets us get in to cut the canes without getting torn up by the thorns. We have a chainsaw but it doesn't have the same reach. Burning is not a option. Though they lifted the summer burn ban last Friday, you can't do open brush burning. We had too dry...

Jumping the Moon Dairy - the next chapter

So Cal also has a lot of old shake shingle roofs. If the wind come in the wrong direction they could lose whole neighborhoods like No Cal did. My sister-in-law in Sonoma, a block from the town center, has been under advisory evacuation for a few days now. They left for a time yesterday but...

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

We get our regular hay right out of the field for $3.50 for 65 lbs. If we have to get it from his barn it's $4. We have no way to get the big bales up in our hay loft, the 65 pounders are tough enough. So little alfalfa is planted here that the feed store almost never has a supply.

    Seattle, Wa

We have 23 goats, 10 adult and 13 born this last spring. We also have 2 guard llamas. We are 10 miles west of Interstate 5, off highway 6. You had mentioned trying to convince your husband to do this, Friendly goats work magic every time. If you want to come down some time just let me know...

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

I know what you mean about the expense of alfalfa. We don't have a way to handle the big bales so it is just 65 pounders for us. The best price we have found is $13 a bale and because it is so rare here he sells out in days. With a pellet alfalfa added to a mixed orchard, timothy, wild grass...

    Latestarter's ramblings/musings/gripes and grumbles.

What we are feeding now is a mix of orchard, timothy, and wild grasses. The goats and llamas both seem to love it and we get less dropped feed than before because it is very fine stem. When we have hay put in next spring it will be a similar mix. We showed it to our vet and he gave us the go...

Jumping the Moon Dairy - the next chapter

My sister-in-law lives a block off the town square in Sonoma and it's been bad enough that the have their critical papers and family photos loaded in their car.
