Welcome to the forum and a whole bunch of wonderful people. We live in an area of Tennessee that is vastly overpopulated with deer but for what it is worth, I have never seen a deer inside our fence. We left an open lane outside of our fences all of the way around so deer don't have to come...
The light bulb came on yesterday for the young ram. He finally figured out that he could get close to me without being attacked and take a cracker out of my hand. It didn't take but a few times doing that that now he acts like he has been tame all along. I still run him into the chute so it...
I'm not sure how your sheep act but mine are completely different outside the fence. They move faster and more erratically almost like they know that dad isn't going to stand there and watch them very long. :)
I still use the Border Collie occasionally but that's only to keep his confidence...
We did have frost this morning but it turned out to be right at 70 degrees and pretty.
Teresa should be getting home around 6:30. I made a pot of Navy Bean Soup with ham hocks that turned out really good if she wants something to eat. She stopped at a Cracker Barrel a few hours ago so soup is...
Our summers are usually fairly mild. We have a couple weeks in the 90's in September and that's about it. We are likely to have frost in the morning. and then back up which is also the norm.
I guess fall is truly here as I had to break out some jeans and a light jacket this morning to go out. This is the first time since the past spring that I didn't wear shorts and the animals weren't sure who I was at first until I started pulling out crackers. :)
We finally got a bit of rain this evening. It was only about a half inch but I swear that I could hear the grass sighing out there.
Today was a routine day other than taking Mel and Maisy in for another skunk bath. This is the second time this year but they didn't get hit as bad as the last...
Nothing new here and I haven't even had to cut any grass due to the lack of rain for a couple weeks. For the grass that needs to be cut, I put the bagger on the mower and am hauling that to the sheep to take some pressure off the paddocks. Our adult sheep have gotten the benefit of the mower...
She is having a good visit and even cousins are getting involved. There isn't much I can't handle and this group of ewes are our oldest ewes that trust me completely and that always makes it easier. We have friends just minutes away if something comes up that I need help with.
I have a feeling that there is going to be an early frost this year. I hope that I'm wrong but I have already stockpiled grass for about a months worth grazing just in case.
That isn't in the plan. We just want happy sheep that are as healthy as they can be.
We have lambs due any day now so Teresa is bailing out and heading to Missouri tomorrow morning, :) Obviously she isn't bailing out since I usually handle the lambing anyway. Her siblings are all in their...
The vet was right on time this morning and we had brought the whole bunch in so we could sort them out and only have the sheep that needed to be worked on in the chute. We had one ewe that needed worming so we got her done as we sent them through. When the vet got here, we had the young ram...
We have a couple of things that need to be checked out by a vet so we have her coming out tomorrow around 9:00. We have a ram lamb that needs a health check for traveling and while she is here, Oshi has a spot on his back that we want to have checked out. The way we are set up, we have to...
Her sibling is just as bad. He hasn't been handled much and when Teresa got close to him to run him back to the stall, he freaked out and rammed the fence which was loose at the bottom. It was loose enough that he was able to get out and run all the way around the paddock looking for a way to...
This was a get a bunch of little things done mornings. We brought one group in and pulled fecals on two of the ewes and we had two lambs that needed their shots. One of the lambs wanted to make sure I got my exercise done so she was one of those that kept running from one end of the interior...
Three of the sheep that we pulled fecals on need to be wormed so I'll bring the whole group back to the shop paddock tomorrow. That works out well since I haven't been able to entice Wendy's ram lamb back in so we will do that tomorrow. The lamb and Babs will be confined to the stall so that I...
