After decades of wanting to get sheep, we finally got two of them this past August. All I had to do was send the spouse off on a skiing trip last March and then fence in the back yard during that time. Ha! Well, at least get the project started during the ski trip, it was finished afterwards...
'Whatever is in the driveway' doesn't sound anywhere near as exciting, does it? Although, I was thinking 'cattle' or 'sheep', but driving a truck is easier. A friend of mine can drive a team of six, but I'd be lucky to drive a goat cart, not that we have one.
Does your truck still have the...
Today Covid is affecting me by not being able to buy dried beans at the grocery. Since when are dried beans not in stock? The shelves of canned beans are empty, too. I was gonna make bean soup and there's no beans? Well, guess I'll make this pork roast into kalua pig and go plant some beans...
G'morning! KarmaSu 100% Kona coffee this morning. The stuff is really good. Su gave it to us awhile back and we'd not drank it since it was special, but there's a whole freezer door of 'special' coffee since other folks have given us some now, too, so it's time to start drinking it.
We...
We'd love to have you help eat avocados, Baymule. We can't get rid of them fast enough this year because of that wretched virus. Usually we take them to any social group that we know of, but this year, there's no groups. So what are we supposed to do with all these avocados? Tossing them...
G'morning! We got to sleep in a little later today since yesterday there was Rooster Relocation around here. Usually, chicken soup is used to cure crowing, but I was too lazy so they just got relocated instead. They moved off to someone who wants roosters, I think they will still become soup...
My dad had a large backyard garden so gardening happened as a kid. For a few years, my grandparents lived on my uncle's farm although he didn't farm it. My grandfather had a half dozen milking cows and a very small dairy there although as a Realtor, he had a job in town. My grandmother had a...
They get a variety of different tree branches to chew on. They especially like eating the bark off of ti plants as well as mulberry branches and citrus branches. We also give them alfalfa cubes, the big square ones as chew toys as well as food. There's a little bit of nibbling on their hutch...
Hmm, now that you mention it, it does seem as if the bucks chew more than the does. We keep the bucks in their own separate spaces and the does in a herd, perhaps they get bored by themselves and want to chew on things?
Aloha Keith & Terri,
Howzit, eh? We're over in Honokaa, which is somewhere near you, perhaps. But, we only have two woolly sheep and the ram is a 'runt' and not - as far as we know - useful as a ram. Guess he wouldn't be much help with increasing your herd. If you have a ram with your ewes...
The ones around here talk a lot. There's meeping, squeaking, thumps, grunts, grumbles and the occasional yodel as well as the highly alarming "I am about to die!" scream. Young babies are probably the noisiest.
Really?!! That would be so kewl if it were true! It would be the easiest worming ever. These sheeples will attack for avocados and we've got tons of them right now.
We can only eat so much guacamole and with that stupid virus around, we're not out and about so how can we give them all away?
My friend's sheep love bananas and will do anything for them whereas our two sheeples don't care for bananas. They will, however, mob anyone or anything to get an avocado. Which isn't supposed to be good for them, but the shepherdess we got the sheeples from said her sheep have been in a...
The Cornish x Rock cross are not really bio-engineered, just a standard hybrid cross. It has been done long before any GMO techniques were around. It was originally a standard Cornish rooster with a standard Plymouth Rock hen, but they've been selecting the parent breeds now for over half a...
Maybe wool mites? Is there any dandruff anywhere else? There may be flakes down in the fur that are showing up on the testes because that's somewhere for them to stick? If it is flakes stuck to the testes and not some sort of skin condition, then try putting a dab of Ivermectin horse wormer in...
We usually leave a box in with the does full time since if it's not put where they usually pee, they don't make a mess in it. Sometimes somebunny will decide to go in the nestbox, then we will switch it out with a different one and put it in a different spot.
There's occasionally a period of...
Yup, pretty much two for one is what I've found to be the 'price' to get folks to process critters. They also usually don't want to do them in huge amounts, but will do up to four at a time. But, that all depends on who you find.
zip strips and more fridge racks is what we use for a play corral. Depending on the size of your buns, they may or may not jump over the fence.
FWIW, we built a hutch using refrigerator racks for the walls and flooring and ended up with some broken legs when their feet got caught in the wires...
The ones here frequently get fed after dusk, so they're starting to equate a cellphone flashlight with feed. They're usually busy in the morning and evenings, so I dunno if they are overly concerned about night time. We don't usually fuss with them much past dusk, though.
Are they there yet? Usually a doe will make a nest just a few days before she has kits. I give them a nest box four days in advance and they'll usually start building a nest within a day or two.
Holland Lops are a small breed, so they will mature faster than large rabbits and she could have a...
