About a week and a half ago I got a call from a family looking for a pot belly piglet for a mainly indoor pet. I only had 2 piglets left from the younger litter, the one that is the topic of this thread and his brother. The family came out, and suggested that this little guy (I had been...
You can feed dog food when in a pinch (like you are out of pig feed and can't get any right away) but I don't reccomend it as part of a pig's natural diet. I stick with mini-pig food and am just now feeding 2 of my pots regular pig feed to see how the grow for butcher.
I know what you mean. Bugsy is a very sweet boar, but when his leg hurt, he wanted no part of me-----not even if I had a banana! You can only do the best you can. I can't imagine having to give shots to a pig that size!
We use the hog panels and T-posts for our PBPs and they work great! We haven't had one escape yet. I don't know if there is a price difference between the cattle panels and the hog panels. I like the hog panels, because if you want to get in there quickly w/o undoing the "gate" you can climb...
When my boar, Bugsy, had an injury to his leg he spent a lot of time standing in his swimming pool. Your right, it is probably very soothing. I would worry about infection---which is what happened with Bugsy. Liam probably needs antibiotics. I hope he feels better soon. I get very scared if...
I had pretty much the same experience as daisychick when we had our pig processed. If you have to let the butcher know exactly what you want, I think the smaller packages are better----you can defrost just what you want.
My pigs all live outside. Right now, Nigel is in a pen with one of my sows, Marilyn. He is about 7 mos. old and around 20 lbs. and probably 14 inches tall. He may not get as big as my other boar, because the people I got him from had been feeding him nothing but dogfood and he was a little on...
Katie, just looked at pics of your little guy----he's very tiny! Have you come across this website pigs4ever.com? I have gotten SO much great information about Pot Belly Pigs from there. My pigs are all living outdoors, but my boar, Bugsy, is the sweetest thing ever! All of them are so funny...
Welcome to BYHs! As far as the question of "mini-pigs", you are correct in saying that they are all just a variation of the Vietnamese PBP. They are called "mini-pigs" not because they are the so-called teacup size, but because they truly are miniature compared with the traditional farm hogs...
Bugsy is all better! His leg started improving dramatically just 2 days after the vet visit. I have him separated from the sow he was with-----but am wanting to put them back together. I believe she's already bred, but I know he would be happiest living with another pig.
I keep looking at your pig-----oh how I wish I could have her! I breed pot bellies, and she would probably do great here-----but I kept one of my female piglets to breed with a boar I got this spring. Dang it, why does yours have to be so cute?!?
Yes, we're very happy that they're both girls. I may keep Sammy, but am definately selling Frankie. I think there is just something extra special about Sammy----plus she has wattles. I love wattles!
Well, here they are!
Doeling 1 (Calling her Sammy after Sammy Davis Jr.----that's who she looks like to me.)
Doeling 2 (I think it's a doeling---may call her Frankie after Frank Sinatra)
Pictures with Mom----who is a GREAT Mommy!
We have babies!! :celebrate The first is almost solid black with salt and pepper nose and ears----doeling. The second is also mostly black with salt and pepper nose and ears, white star on top of head and a white splash on the right side---not sure of sex. :love I will definately post pics in...
Here is Flory tonight.
(The bare spot on her back is from when I shaved her and she had knocked the guard off the clippers w/o me knowing it!)
So, what does everyone think? Will she kid tonight?
