Smitty was a fabulous dog. He did everything I needed him to do and often was a step ahead of me. He was a dog I rarely needed to check on or look for. He didn’t pick fights but could handle himself. He rescued his partner who was being drowned by a raccoon at 2a then finished it off. He adapted...
Well I made an appointment for Smitty’s euthanasia tomorrow at 11a. Being Smitty he beat me to it, passing a few minutes ago. Simple passing, Hubbs and I were sitting with him. Couldn’t ask for better. Weird thing to say but it was just that.
He’s ok for now. Hubbs and I go sit and talk to him. We are both willing to lug him around as best we can but it’s no life for him. Smitty is one of the few dogs I wish I could have bred but there is such reckless waste with so many breeds.
He’s exiting the garage to relieve himself outside. But not steady enough to resume normal life. This afternoon he took an ominous turn, as we were moving him after a bath, a front leg failed. He’s as comfortable as I can get him but sanitation, digestion, and logistics tell me it’s that time.
Smitty went on hop about again last night. Was in a spot he likes to watch from. We are fenced so he’s safe. Then returned to garage. He has a place to lay down, a big fan and I think I’ll figure out a swamp cooler of some sort. I’m still working on a rear end raiser. Tried the shopping bag...
Public service announcement. An asphalt road near my home was covered in flood water that looked to be 3 or 4 inches deep. The road and the center line paint were easily visible. What couldn’t be immediately seen, especially from a car, is that the ground beneath the road had washed away...
Morning all. Smitty did an overnight in the backyard, bunny hopping out of the “sick critter” room in the garage, after I fell asleep. No way to tell if he peed. I will call the vet later for more info about bladder issues. I have to figure out how to move him when Hubbs is at work. Towel around...
FCE fibrocartilaginous embolism. Spinal cord damaged by clot/ material. He can’t feel anything past the cord lesion. The next hurdle is urine. Ah Pee, you haunt me these days. If Smitty can’t urinate he’s done. Never thought I’d want to see a puddle on the floor.
Oh vey! Just as Crockett turns an improvement corner, eating and drinking and urine better, Smitty had an embolism. Both rear legs unusable. Thankfully Hubbs was at home to get him out of the sun quickly and get him into and out of the car without drama. Prognosis is poor but we are trying some...
I don’t begrudge the LGDs eggs as long as they don’t get greedy. Often the eggs are questionable and would have been dog eggs anyway. Old Timers (like my in-laws) are shocked and declare “the shotgun” but different times require different responses. We’ll see if he eats better tonight/ liver...
He’s always had darker urine. He was treated successfully for erlichiosis in February. He may be eating chicken eggs, I have two renegade hens in the barn. Hubbs found a hole under the fence (tree fell tore up a root)
so extracurricular exercise. Water bunks topped off and a pond and a spring...
The Foot report: better. I finally remembered some excessive strain I put on that foot that could account for issues. So damage not deterioration. One of the LGDs is sick. I think it’s temperature related- poor appetite, weight loss, darker urine. So he’s off duty and inside. I’ve scissored most...
Iced Cuban coffee. :celebrate Foot slightly improved but I still can’t feed or chore. We have enough take out food til Monday. Hubbs has tried to improve my tried and true chore routine with predictable problems, animals in the wrong place or missing, spilled feed, open gates. But no major...
Happy lunch hour. Foot issues are back to my great frustration. Hubbs noticed my big toe (a bunion) asked if that could be relevant. Years ago I had a lift and carry, go and stow job in a warehouse. The bunion was a souvenir. I didn’t take it seriously, nor did my physian’s assistant. Bunion has...
In the early 80’s hoppers troubled parts of NE and KS. In the towns annoying hoppers. In the pastures a different insect but not reported about. Grasshoppers shifted gears to locusts. They ate things up and were learning to fly. What stopped them was they consumed all forage then started on each...
