If the farm income is in your name, that might be seen as some sort of fraud. Be careful about that. Can the farm income can be in his name as long as he is hiring people (you) to work the farm? At 14 years, with the aouint of time he has spent helping to raise the XGF's daughter, as well as...

Good idea. Be sure to remove door facing on side of door that will not be seen as much - side facing the wall when open. If too much damage when replacing facing, consider using thin gauge molding in a pattern to cover damage.

Rika is in that mode now. They are still able to train and will protect if necessary, but I think they start to recognize their age and let the younger ones get on with it.

Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

Thanks. I probably will ask you to send me particulars where to get them. I can put the bags of feed into them wothout opening instead of emptying them into the barrels. That will take care of the problem with getting the feed out of the bottoms. The metal cans will keep rodents from...

Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

DS1 thinks our 50 gallon metal barrels may have rotted out over the past 35 years. Have to find some in Texas. On good note, DS1 found the spot where our fence is vulnerable to dogs getting out. Ozel has gotten out twice. She ends up on the driveway by the gate to the field. In the far back...

If it works, I think it is great. I always look at the esiest way to fix anything first then move on from there. Only problem with barn doors in bathrooms is being able to lock them but with small children in the house, no need to lock doors. Besides you have a master bath for privacy - if...

The journey into the abyss of no return

Hogs work better when they can't see out, that is why pig boards are solid. Hogs are so powerful that light weight portable pens won't hld them. Since you can weld, you might be better off using old gates and metal fencing to make yur own. Then put plywood over the frames with U-bolts. (You...

Avon's Skin So Soft" is supposed to be great bug repellant. I still have a couple bottles that I bought for beach camping trips years ago. Also used it to rub on horses faces back then. DD1's pony was allergic to petroleum based fly sprays. We also used to ter laundry softener dryer sheets...

Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

When DS2 & 3 had their dairy goat herd they had 20 milkers give or take on a 20 month lactation and on test. I would go once a month to the feed mill in Ontario about 2 hours away. There was a dairy store and a vet supply there as well. It was one hour beyond the auction barn in Chino going...

Ridgetop - our place and how we muddle along

Friday: Knee is hurting but not enough for pain pills. The surgical tape has fallen off and the scar area is tender. Hate this part of recovery. I took another walk around outside. The walker is getting difficult to manage on the rough asphalt so hopefully I can graduate to a cane this...

Are there any old posts anywhere on the property that may at one time have outlined old pastures? It is possible that a wire was left attached when the rest of the old wires were removed.

48" is not high enough perimeter fencing for either sheep or LGDs. For sheep, predators can clear it easily, and LGDs will clear it if they feel something needs their attention outside the perimeter. Since the fence is already in place, try putting in higher posts with 2 spans of electric...

I love barn doors where you can use them. Swing doors are often put in unisable positions. saw a model home once where the builders installed a hinged door soit seung into the toilet bowl giving you 20" THROUGH WHICH TO ENTER THE BATHROOM! What odiots! Barn doors in bathrooms are ideal for...

    Electric fencing conundrum

My perimeter fence is all woven wire 78" tall to keep LGDs safe. I will be dividing acreage into more pastures with Premier netting so very interested in this thread.

Buying a horse? What age should it be?

It os po0ssiblpe that your instructor could find you a good horse. Many instructors at stables have clients (or know other instructors that have clients) that often want to sell good horses for various reasons.

Buying a horse? What age should it be?

If you have only been riding lesson horses, and your family has not been riding at all, I would look for an older horse that has some trail years on him. Moat horses don't even start saddle training until around 2-3 years old so a 5 year old has only been under saddle for about 2 years. I...
