leasing my land for hay -- suggested contract details needed

Ensure that hay is picked up off the land in a timely manner. If it remains too long it kills grass and that is how weeds take over. Unless equipment breaks down or it pours rain we get hay off within 4 or five days. If renters have to haul a distance and it takes them days to get done? Then...

Sick Goats left and right - help! (UPDATE!)

Been there and this is what I did!!! Dexamethasone for anyone not pregnant to kickstart new red blood cell production. For whatever reason, some goats will not make new RBC and 45 days later, when new RBC should be maturing goat dies! Do not give to pregnant animals as it induces labor. This...

    Small wormy ewes?

I quarantine all new additions for 30 days. During that time I deworm at 10 day intervals, treat for coccidia if under a year old, treat for lice/mites/ticks. At least two fecals done to ensure deworming effective. Bringing in resistant parasites is not something I want to do. Whatever...

    Nigerian Dwarf Bottle Feeding Chart

Risk of bloat rises the longer they are bottle fed. Cutting back by half on milk will help them transition. Once they are eating hay and grain well, stop milk altogether. Without older goats to show them how, they might be slow to eat grain. I just keep shoving some in their mouth as they...

Heads on a swivel you folks on Eastern Seaboard. Flo's coming.

Highway patrol heavy on I 40 and I 81 here! Traffic heavy going west and north. This storm is as wide as the state of Tennessee is long!!!! Authorities are saying you do not have to be in flood plain as this is such a huge storm it is going to flood where it has never flooded in previous storms.

Water sound and diarrhea in goat... help!

Yeah, find a vet that knows ruminants (treats cows) and in mean time offer good quality hay, water, but not grain. B vitamins is good. Also a probiotic good. Have you treated for coccidia? Is she running a temp? Deworming also good. That water moving around noise is not good, and I have...

What to do about muddy areas!

We used the coarse wood chips that tree trimmers make out of branches. Our county and electric co-op both do regular cutting and we let them know where it was ok to dump on property. We use them while green and you will have to add more every year or two. There was one huge mud hole that even...

Heads on a swivel you folks on Eastern Seaboard. Flo's coming.

The big danger the news is saying is that it will stall out and dump huge amounts of rain from coast to over a hundred miles inland. Even if where you are has always been safe from flooding this is record setting rainfall! Here in east Tennessee TVA has been drawing down lakes to be ready for...

    Hurt ram.

Welcome! What breed of sheep? How old? Where are you located? Back injury could have damaged nerves? How did he hurt his back? Why on antibiotic? Does he have a fever, which would indicate infection. The banamine I understand for pain and inflammation. Things like tetanus, deer Menegeal...

    Have you tried Carhartt boots?

For cold , wet weather I like Muck type as they are comfortable and keep my feet warm even standing on concrete. So far they stand up to manure, detergent, bleach, and acid on dairy cow farm. No leather boot will stand up to manure exposure very long. The enzymes in manure literally digest...

Heads on a swivel you folks on Eastern Seaboard. Flo's coming.

I remember being 13 and visiting Gulfport the summer after Camille. Blocks and blocks of concrete sidewalks and steps up to houses that were no longer there. Here and there a HUGE ship way up on shore, beached!

Bleach pen phone number on horses rump works well! Bit trickier on longer haired critters like goats.

SBC/GW's Journal- Spring shows DONE! & Update

Thank one of the Considine boys for all goats looking alike if they have a bag over their head. Chicken boned goats will not last over the long haul of multiple births and high milk production. Every time I got LA'd the skinny goats got E in DC and fat ones +. Those fat ones poured the milk...

Jumping the Moon Dairy - the next chapter

That would work as I won't have but at most a dozen to milk. My hands are beginning to get stiff and I figure I better get ready to switch over to machine.

    Weaning himself?

Forgot to add, I will always take temp twice a day on any animal I suspect is not feeling well. Many times I caught early something that could have been serious. I have a cheap pair of artery forceps tied with about 2 foot of string to loop on rectal thermometer. Regardless of species always...

    Weaning himself?

If you also vaccinated for tetanus, that can also make him feel bad. Stress puts load on available B vitamins. I have found giving a daily B complex injection and oral probiotic until eating ok to help.
