I will NEVER make a farmer!

There you go! She seems hot and panting tonight. I let her out of the pig house for a wallow, but she came right back in. Don't know if it's stress? It's like 68 out. She seems constipated (or at least not going). Think tomorrow I'll encourage her to go out more. Her udder is not very...

I will NEVER make a farmer!

Thank you, I am a HAPPY sorta farmer now. I managed to not check until 3 a.m. She had her back to me, but I could see one little bobbing head nursing and one toddling around, one dead one that looked as if it came out with the afterbirth. And I left as she isn't real sure about the...

911 EMERGENCY Vet on vacation til the 29th!!! Very sick calf

I am so sorry, but sounds for the best. As my friends who've farmed all their lives point out, even university farms with umpteen vets lose calves on a regular basis.

I will NEVER make a farmer!

Thank you--that is just what I needed to hear! Yep, she has bedding. She had hauled the newish hay out of her pig house and started her outside nest with it, and added (very nicely) swathes of fresh grass. I pitchforked it all back in the house, which has anti-squish boards around on one...

I will NEVER make a farmer!

So my pig is in labor, or at least nervous, pacing, and, panting. Not seeing any pushing. Ended up locking her in the pig house, as it it pouring. She's wants to go wallow, but am afraid she wouldn't come back in. She began to build a nest outside about 6 this evening and she was sure she'd...

This Ad- look at your own risk!

You need to edit your thread to add one of those "graphic picture" warnings! Even that poor pup looks like it's going "eeewwww".

    What to test for?

Could it be herpes? They are just miserable when they have that and it takes quite awhile to get it cleared up. I'd also recommend asking the vet. Think we used to use chlorhexadine for it. It's not that unusual for cows with big bags to get a sore in the front of their bag and we used the...

What kind of weed is this?

Yep. I e-mailed our extension agency, and the guy there said it's just been a banner year for germinating seeds. (And before I tasted, I did have a rough idea that it shouldn't kill me!) Sheepgirl, your's looks a lot tallerthan mine in the second photo. Ours doesn't get any more than knee high.

What to use for possible pneumonia?

I'd still say to brace him up so he's not laying flat, but I'm no good with the meds part. I wouldn't eat meat from an animal with that much going on--don't know if it would be harmful, but doubt very tasty. Hard to give up on them if they're still trying, isn't it? I've seen some what I...

What kind of weed is this?

x2. It's taking over our pastures terribly--never seen it like this. My husband esp. has noticed it where he has reseeded bare areas or new pasture--he thinks it was in the bag of pasture mix we bought last year ($70.00) Don't know if it's coincidence or not. I tasted it out of curiosity of...

I'm getting a Jersey Cow!!!! She's soo sweet!

That's just great! Did you ever try the new (to me, anyway) ice cream makers? You leave the bowl part in the freezer and don't have to use rock salt, etc. or crank. Think mine was around 30 dollars and I LOVE it! Awesome frozen yogurt.

What to use for possible pneumonia?

You could also try putting a hay bale behind his back to keep him from laying flat out.

    Broodies EVERYWHERE!

I've had some problems in the past with my hens being more interested in someone else's new chicks than the eggs they're on. I've lost some chicks in a tug of war--they'd each grab a chick wing and try to stuff the little guy under them. Won't have that problem any time soon--lost 4 hens to fox:/

911 EMERGENCY Vet on vacation til the 29th!!! Very sick calf

I'd for sure stop giving him milk if he's bloating.

    Help- Need BACON!!!

In my 1970's era pig book, the author says that people told him that if you don't use nitrates, you're meat will turn a gray color, but that did NOT happen and his meat was fine.

    Freezing tomatoes

Yes. I give them a quick wash and then throw them in a bag in the freezer. If you run them quickly under hot water when you take them out, the skin slips right off.

    Pot belly crosses?

I'd wonder if you would then want to breed the offspring to a small pig? Not sure with pigs, but I've seen mixes of big breed cows bred with small breed cows where the offspring had a pelvis on the small side, but threw large calves.

Ok to mix 2 cows milk?

I don't know why you wouldn't mix the milk, unless you were concerned one was 'off'? I almost always got my milk out of the pre-cooler at work unless I wanted the most cream, then I'd pick my cow. I assume it mentions on the CMT instructions that you can get a false postive on recently calved...

Thanks for sharing! What's up with that poor baby in a washtub? In my neck of the woods we use the turkey roaster at that age:lau.
