I would say that it depends on how large of an area the pigs have. If they have a large pasture you might be able to let them farrow in the pasture. Here is a good site about pasture raising hogs http://sugarmtnfarm.com/blog/2007/06/petra-pigs-pastured-piglet.html
It is what I intend to do...
I have experience with my 4 old spots and 2 york/hamp crosses. The crosses rooted extensively. My old spots root occasionally. In fact my largest old spot, a 1 year old gilt (soon to be sow), has been on the same area since October with her 4 goat buddies and a LGD and the only areas damaged...
I have a 6 week old calf that I need to get disbudded. I would like to learn how to do it myself in the future, but don't feel I know enough to try on a calf I care about. The vet said $150 to come and do it. I don't know if he would be willing to teach me.
So what are my options? Anyone in...
Just an update. The calf is doing great on the pasturized milk! I can already tell that she has grown and filled out more. She has even been in a covered outside enclosure and had they night time wind chills in the single digits. She has a coat, a dog house and a pile of hay outside the dog...
Still waiting on kids and I'm very happy for that. The bad thing is the majority of my animals are at my in laws and in an area with no electricity. In a few more weeks we will be closing on our new house which has 7 acres so all the animals will be coming with us. I will then be building a...
She is about 20 months old and this will be herfirst. She started developing a bag two weeks ago. Today she had lost her ligaments and was drpping some clearish fluid. It is going to be 7 degrees with the wind chill. I have a 300 gallon water tank filled with shavings and a big hole in one side...
Well researching today I found a article about pasteurized waste milk being fed to calves. This was unsalable milk at the dairy farm. They said that pasteurizing the milk was better for the calves than feeding the raw waste milk.
I think I'm going to go ahead and feed her the milk with added...
I'm getting a Jersey calf that is at least 4 weeks old. The seller told me to get Dumor Calf Starter and 25lbs of milk replacer.
I was wondering which would be best for the calf the milk replacer or whole milk from the store?
The reason I ask is that I work at a dairy and we give away...
This will be my first Jersey and I'm excited. I'm picking her up on Sunday.
I want one that will be smaller And the farmer has told me he has three that should mature between 46-49inches. He sent me pics of 5 calfs. I told him the three we like and asked him can you tell me what they should...
I raised 2 feeder pigs and my old spot gilt with my goats. They do fine together. I separated my pregnant doe when she was due and waited till the little ones were 2 weeks old to put them back together. I kept one of those kids and he will even sleep on top of my old spot.
I have Old Spots and I love them. My oldest gilt is 15 months old and hopefully will be bred next month. My boar is 6 months and my other 2 gilts are 4 months old. They do great on pasture. They root occasionally but not like the feeder pigs we had.
I'm in NE Georgia.
I feed my pigs a variety. They are on pasture plus get pig food, scraps, and lots of expired milk products. They prefer their milk to a little chuncky. Silly pigs. We have about 2 months till processing time, gotta get their appointment.
