We made a homemade splint and taped it around to try to keep it from filling back in. It didn't totally work, but helped slightly. It doesn't help that he keeps ramming his head and ear on everything. I'm afraid to do surgery because he will keep rubbing it, but yet I can't leave the ear...
Yup. Well, he not only survived but is doing fine now. The treatment worked. We were thinking maybe he could have eaten some blue spruce pine needles. I am going to keep this recipe, as I do think it may have saved his life.
We drained it daily for a while, but it kept filling back in with blood (almost seems bigger each time, to be honest). We also did penicillin IM for four days because it smelled like infection. I think it did clear up the infection, but the ear is still so swollen with the blood that the ear...
I noticed a lamb with a frothy mouth this afternoon and very slow moving. I googled it and all I could find was frothy bloat. So I mixed up the recipe of 1/2 cup water, 1/2 cup vegetable oil, 2 tsp baking soda, and pepto bismol. I stirred it up and gave him some of it in a drencher. There is...
It's now much bigger than it was initially, prior to the drainage. The entire ear is drooped down. I'm at a loss of what to do here. I don't think this will absorb on its own.
Is it ok to have them on the same pasture and in the same pen in the barn at night? I suppose it could depend on the individual cow. I'm considering a cow that has horns and my sheep are polled.
I made a small puncture with a needle and aspirated blood. I then massaged the ear to empty it out and applied preparation H cream. It worked initially, but of course it has filled back in with blood again because it's not sutured. We're thinking about making a splint and taping it up. That...
I've figured out that my ram has an ear hematoma and I've read the treatment is surgery. I would be fine with the incision and drainage, but I'm not sure how to suture to cartilage. I'm thinking I'm going to be stuck paying for a vet to come out.
My ram's ear is so swollen that it is closed. I believe he must have gotten stung by a honeybee. It does not look like an abscess, but is more diffuse, where the entire ear is swollen and sagging down. It feels warm. No signs of cuts or scabs. I gave him two benadryl. No changes.
Do you think the Scottish Highlands would get along okay with babydoll sheep? Are their horns a problem? Would they ram at you or other animals with them? Can they be penned together in the barn?
Does anyone keep cows or donkeys with their sheep? (I'm sure donkeys are common, however.) If so, how are they together? Can they share the same pasture or pen? Do they get along? Could a cow hurt the sheep?
This ewe's udder is getting so huge that I am concerned. The other ewe is starting to dry up and get smaller because I believe she is not letting her lambs nurse as much anymore. But this ewe is getting bigger instead of smaller. It doesn't look red or anything, but I think she's...
My husband and I were not able to look into the mouth; we tried. But I decided to lance the abscess. Nothing but blood came out. There was no pus or other fluids. I also removed the existing scab to see if anything would drain via that route and nothing. Maybe the antibiotics cleared it up...
We are having difficulty trying to look into the mouth! I'm done with the four days of pen G. I'm not sure if I need to lance it or not. There's really not much fluid behind it, but yet it's not flat either.
