Thanks guys. That was also the info I had read. What a conundrum. We have a 400bl boar and 2 probably pregnant sows in a 100X50 foot pen on 2.5 acres of land in the desert, so no grazing. And not enough room to separate to the point that he no longer produces the taint. We are getting ready...

We have two sows and a boar. The boar is probably around 400 lbs. He eats a lot. The sows were bred and if they don't come back into heat in about 20 days then they're probably pregnant, right? So I was thinking it'd be cheaper to slaughter the big boar and buy a male piglet for the next round...

    Many questions...

I got home from work today and looked out the window and they were mating. So now I know at least one is bred! LOL.

    Many questions...

Also, I read pigs can be bred for 10 years, is this true? If so, does the litter size diminish with age like egg production in chickens? And can the pigs be eaten after they're done being used for breeding?

    Many questions...

We have 2 sows and a boar all housed together. Until just a few days ago, there was a castrated hog in there with them, but he's been processed. We got the sows when they were around 3 months old, in the middle of February. We don't spend a lot of time with the pigs, just feed and water them...

    Pig poop

Having 100+ temps with no moisture means I don't mind the weeds. Especially if it's something I can feed to my animals. I use it as a living mulch. Keeps the soil cool and damp so I don't have to water as much.

    Pig poop

Before we built the 100x50 pen we raised pigs at a friend's house and his pens were much much smaller, about 20x10, and they were absolutely disgusting, which is why I asked this question. However, in the 100x50 it hasn't been a problem. They have enough room that they just poop everywhere...

Best small breed for beef in Mohave Desert?

We have been stuck on Dexters for a while because we wanted a small breed dual purpose breed, but we've decided to use goats for milk. Since we're not planning on milking, would Dexters still be the best option, or something else? We live in the desert, so no fresh grazing. They will be baled...

    Our pig set up

Thanks! I just love her to death. She is, by far, my favorite animal. LOL

So we got the house and moved in in January. We have since slaughtered and ate the hog we raised at a friends house. We now have 4 pigs; 1 intact hog, 2 sows and 1 castrated hog for slaughter. We have a new flock of chickens, ducks and turkeys. Got a horse, but that didn't work out so well and...

    Our pig set up

Hi, I just wanted to show you guys our pig set up. We live in the Mojave Desert, and it can get really hot, so I will go out and hose them off in their shaded area (keeps them from using the bathroom in the mud) a couple times on the hottest days. They are digging a hole under the water nipples...

Do you think she's full Pygmy?

The lady I bought her from wasn't sure the breeds of her goats, but mom and dad both look just like her. Or is she a Nigerian Dwarf? I just love her to death!

a probably 3 month old pig walked into my yard..now what?

Well dang, I read that whole thing and never got to find out how boar bacon tastes....

Is this too much space for our pigs?

Everyone around here is convinced that giving pigs too much space to run around makes them grow slow. I'm convinced the meat will be leaner. The last pig we did raised at a friends house in a small pen had SO MUCH fat on it that had to be cut off. The younger pigs here are about 5 months and do...

    What breed are my pigs?

I'm still waiting on a reply from the breeder of the 3 younger ones, but the big black one is a Yorkshire x Berkshire. Thank you everyone for your replies.

Are puncture vines toxic to goats?

Ok, this is a question for anyone familiar with the evil puncture vine/goathead. We have an 8 week old pygmy goat. Our entire property is overrun with goatheads/puncture vines. She really really wants to eat them, but I've read they're toxic to cows and horses. Are they also toxic to goats?
