we harvested rolls of mixed grasses hay this summer. they're not moldy and don't have thorns or toxic plants in it. how else do I determine if it is of a quality to be good for my girls? thanks
I saw on the tv show 'The Incredible Dr. Pol', which is about a vet in Michigan that he swears by copper sulfate as a wound treatment to dry up wounds & aide healing. do you keep it on hand? I saw a big one gallon container the other day (bigger than I would ever use) for $85 dollars. :ep
I would like to find a cooperative relationship w/a good rat snake. I've started getting mice in my little barn & a good snake would be helpful. I've got an area in my actual coop part of the barn that isn't closed up tight enough though. I need to take care of that little detail.
I live in hot dry Texas. my goats forage. it's been raining for two days now (very unusual). the little girls seem to think they are going to melt if they get out in the rain. I know they're hungry, but i'm afraid to feed them the grain (noble goat feed) for fear they will bloat. they're...
I too had a goat badly hurt. it took a month and half before I was pretty confident she would survive. for her, it was all about the will to live. I am convinced, if she had been isolated, she would have given up. her wounds needed to be kept clean as possible too & it was a real juggling...
just reading the forum and saw your post. I am so very sorry for your hard loss. it's terrible to begin with and then to think the animal suffered makes it harder. I think the cameras, done on the quiet, is a good idea too. if someone is messing with your place - you need to know it.
sorry :(
I copied the fiasco farms plans. not sure how much to donate to their site like they ask.
shingles is a good idea. I have some left over I can use for them to stand on
I wanted to create "shelves" too, but didn't have the means. I did have an old porch about 10 x 10. I cut the weak rotten legs off & laid the top in the goat pen. they seem to like to lay on it as much as the ground. if I don't get their pen cleaned every day, I at least broom off their...
thanks to everyone for posts and information. she seems to be well on the road to recovery, which is amazing considering how severe her wounds have been.
i'm wondering if such a wound that results in pretty significant scarring to her flank & perineal area will play a role when she kids...
I sympathize with you twaycaster. I too am considering getting out of goats. I've been in less than six months & it seems it's all gone wrong. from injury to illness the pattern just keeps perpetuating. this wasn't what I had in mind when I considered goats.
they are lovely animals - they're...
I see pictures y'all have of stands that allow the goat to put it's head through, you have feed or something as goodie & lock the head in place. don't you have to worry about the goat stepping sideways & stepping off the platform & injuring it's neck or worse?
i'm trying to figure out how to...
just an update on this goat. I think she's going to be fine. I say that with caution. things have not gone easy with my adventure in having goats - so, I don't want to jinx her. her wound seems to be closing. no further signs of infection. I cannot believe she is even alive. she has been...
this battle with this wound has been ongoing for a month. I thought she was well on the road to recovery when the big scab came off & this cavity was revealed underneath. initially it stank & there was dead flesh in the wound. now that I know the cavity is there, it is cleaned twice a day...
