    Body shape questions

Thanks. That's interesting that the loin would be longer since that's a desirable cut and the folks that mentioned the mandolin shape seemed to mention were down on it. Like it was a nice rabbit despite having a mandolin body shape. Good to know.

    Body shape questions

Ive seen some people reference to certain breeds as having a mandolin shape body. I'm familiar with the instrument, and I think I can see the difference between that and say a NZW but are there any advantages or disadvantages to this body shape for meat production? I'm only looking for my own...

    Grow out pen help

I measured them out at 24"-30" wide at least this year. Some years its been 18" and some its been 30". Once I have the pens built I can plan the garden spacing around the widths I need for the pens. I planned on making the pens 48" or 60" long. I had also assumed I may have to be splitting...

    Grow out pen help

Everybody is raving about their chicken tractors which is a portable pen that houses birds. Some folks use them for grow out pens for their meaties so I thought Id build some and finish rabbits in them. My plan was to build a couple of grow out pens that would fit between the rows in the...

Need an opinion what do you think?

Since the internets FULL of them I thought I'd go ahead and ask :P Seriously though I'm thinking hard about adding a draft goat to our set up. We have no goats currently so this is all just thinking aloud. We do want to have a few NDs for our kids to do 4H with and milk. So because of that I...

    Need some insight and opinion

I hope I put this in the right place. My daughter will be coming up on next year 5 and my wife and I thought she's old enough to have a pet. That and she will be eligible able to show in 4H, so we figured that rabbits would be a good fit. She is very into rabbits and figuring their size and...

    Goat pics

Could that be because people are breeding on color and not type? Not trying to attack the OP on this, but that could explain why you've seen so many flashy goats that lack substance/type. That girl there though is a real head turner though.

    Would this work?

Had this totally hair brained idea that I've been meaning to get online and ask someone with more goat knowledge than I (which doesn't take much  ) So anyway I was thinking when I build the goat pen to put up a small awning type shelter and a couple of ground perches for turkeys to roost...

    Grade...what does it mean?

Thanks for the reply Helm, thats good to know. Ill be sure to find out the local rules before I look at any herds. And Freemotion....its a mixed blessing. They love the milk (its REALLY good) but I know I'd struggle to use that much milk too. I brought up the cheese, and other dairy products...

    Grade...what does it mean?

Thats good to know about adding a 3rd so I'm always in milk. That will please the wife and daughter meaning we might keep a doe back from one of our breedings once we get this little venture off the ground.

    Grade...what does it mean?

Gotcha. Thanks and good to know. Do they have to be ADGA or AGS in order to be shown in 4H?

    Grade...what does it mean?

Can you elaborate on this? A couple of does is what Id thought of getting. Nothing crazy (yet ;) ) Ive read about folks alternating breeding times/due dates between does to always stay in milk. Is this a successful strategy thats realistic with a small herd or a couple of does? We already...

    Grade...what does it mean?

Thanks for the fast replies. I had a feeling it was the same as in horses but we all know what happens when one assumes ;) We'd just started talking about last fall at a horse show and the idea came up. Our friends have a Jersey and are kicking themselves for the investment because of volume...

    Grade...what does it mean?

Hi; TOTAL newbie here. I found this place from your sister sites TEG and BYC respectfully. I'm started my research (total research nerd here just ask my wife) with the goal of having some smaller milking goats so my daughter can do 4H and we can have milk. We already have Morgans, and...
