Looking for Dexter or Other Mini Breed Heifers in IN/Oh/Ky/IL

We seem to be going about this out of order and currently have a 3 month old Dexter bull and are looking for some heifers for our new herd. We live in Southern Indiana and would either be willing to buy or do some trading for stud services for part of the price. (said bull, Abraham has an...

    Kiko Opinions?

So we are working on a multi purpose (Dairy and meat) line in our herd - this year we bred out our Alpines to a boer and got some gorgeous babies. The boer buck however was an unmitigated disaster - other than his babies and the fact that he made great brats. We have a two year old here (my...

    Alpacas in the Orchard?

We're moving animals around because the pastures need to regrow. Here's the question, we have apple, peach and plum trees in one part of our property. If we fence that in and put the alpacas in that area will they destroy the fruit trees? The apple trees aren't such a worry (they're tall)...

    It's a Girl. And a Girl. And a GIRL!

so... First off... KIDPILE!!!!! These are the triplet doelings. :) I went out yesterday evening to make sure everyone was getting enough food and saw Stella (due today) stringing more - she had not been showing any sign whatsoever of kidding. I ran in to get boots, call my cousin...

    It's a Girl. And a Girl. And a GIRL!

Nope, it's her fourth kidding I think - she's an old hand and doing quite well. Went out a bit later and then Stella (who was due tomorrow) had twins on the ground - we were only expecting one from her - she had a boy and a girl - pics later. So five doelings and one buckling so far and have...

    Pink colored milk?

I am seconding the mastitis testing. I had a doe as a teen that miscarried a set of twins and came down with mastitis right after that. and yep it was blood in the milk. So I'd double check to be safe...

    Red Oak Creek Kidding Watch...

Still nothing, she's waddling uncomfortably though. Told her to just have the babies already! (Mom said last year she was nothing nothing nothing and then come out and there were babies all fluffy dry and nursing so she's not concerned about this doe...)

    Neutering @ 5 weeks tomorrow

My parents got a banding machine last year and Mom said it was less traumatic on Dad - who usually ends up doing the neutering. Not to mention, he yelled only cause he didn't like being held. Nothing else. I would also wait for 6-8 weeks.

    Storms and my Alpacas...

There is very easy access to the barn - it ain't fancy but it's a big three sided sturdy structure that has been there since my childhood. I feed the grain in the pasture right outside (they have three black plastic bowls that I take in and out) and hay goes in the barn itself. The first...

    Storms and my Alpacas...

We have three alpacas, two unneutered males and one neutered - we may get a female eventually but for now these are our "fiber boys." Anyway, they are in a pasture next to my mother's flock of dairy goats - there is a barn on one side and the other side is under a canvas canopy that...

    Alpine Personalities???

I've been around Alpines most of my life (I'm 31 now and my parents started raising goats when I was 3 or 4 - we have gotten rid of them on and off but went back to them recently. ) and I disagree. We had nubians at one point and I found them to be the LOUDEST most obnoxious creatures...
