Been lurking, off and on. Didn't forget about y'all! ;)
Got Muscovies last year and we're about to have our third clutch hatched out by one of the Mama ducks. Also have a bunch of "extra" eggs that my 11-year-old wants to try out in our new incubator.
Recently found our 3rd dead rat in the...
After a couple of days of Poppy coming in to visit Lily (the new mom) and headbutting, Lily eventually just...ignored her sister and Poppy gave up the headbutting.
Now all the goats are in one area together and it's been fun watching Poppy (auntie) interacting with the 2 bucklings. They want to...
When is it okay to let the baby goats outside to wander around with their mom?
I only have 2 does. Lily gave birth to two bucklings 4 days ago (April 13). Lily's sister, Poppy, sneaks into Lily's area every morning and then the two does headbutt over and over again. Poppy is nice to the...
My FF doe, Lily, gave birth last night. Two bucklings that came out on their own. Perfect births. (though it took me way too long to figure out how to tell what they were. lol) Lily is a great mom.
This morning I noticed Lily has a mushy lump under her chin. We scratch her there often, so I...
I ended up chainsawing the bushes down and my boys drug the pieces to the front yard. Between the goats and my young children who have no clue that not all berries are safe to eat, it was just wise to take it out. Makes the yard look so much bigger with it gone, which I like!
Buck ended up...
My gut instinct was to cut the stupid thing down. I don't like plants that don't have a good purpose, anyway.
But they had left it alone, at first, so I didn't think it was an issue.
They have plenty of other browse, hay, and grains. I thought goats only ate this kind of thing when they had no...
Will it eventually have berries on it? Haven't been here long enough to see what grows on it.
The goats had been fenced far away from this bush but we had to do some livestock switching and now they're wandering the yard while we (slowly) get another area ready.
They've been munching it, off...
Anyone ready for a round of, "Name That Plant"?
This is driving me crazy. My goats love to munch on it and it doesn't appear to be hurting them, but I'm still concerned.
Tried reverse-googling it and one answer said it was persimmon, but there's no fruit on it and it's not a tree. It's a long...
Dogs have dug under the goat fence TWICE now. They don't hurt them, they're just providing a way for the goats to escape and have access to the whole backyard.
It is driving me CRAZY.
If I can find it in the budget I think I'll build a waist high raised STONE garden bed along the goat fence so...
Yeeeeah...I don't know how to tell if the calcium and phosphorus are balanced so if it's not too crazy tomorrow, I'm hoping to hit the feed store for goat feed.
Weelll...they do get alfalfa pellets. I got that back when I noticed the girls weren't eating hay.
I also feed them COB, cracked corn, BOSS, and occasionally whole oatmeal. Though now that I've got the buck, I was thinking of getting regular goat feed because I'm pretty sure the buck is not...
He's getting less skittish. This morning when I went to feed everyone, he didn't run off when I got close. In fact, I had to gently nudge him out of the way and he didn't mind me touching him.
I am having an issue, though, with hay. My does and the buck aren't eating the grass hay. In the past...
We really need a truck! Then transports like these won't be so 🤢
Thank you for the advice. I figure we'll at least keep him a few months, just to make sure he's done the job, and then evaluate from there.
I tried giving him an apple slice as, you know, a peace offering but he tried to head...
