Here's what I did one year. I dug a trench around the bed that was 8 inches deep. I lined the trench with newspaper and fill it with leaves. That worked very well - FOR ONE SEASON - at keeping the grass out of the bed and the edge neat, then I forgot to tend it. Total cost? ZERO!
