HI all,

I'm looking for some cheap and easy methods of putting up a temporary border on a very large flowerbed. I dont have enough bricks to do it.

It doesnt have to be pretty.

The long term plan is to put a living border of day-lily around this bed, but for the time being I'll need something there to protect the lilies as the establish. The bed is about 6 feet wide and 55 feet long, and contains various types of roses and lilies (day lily, tiger lily, Peruvian lily, and Asiatic lily.)

Since its going to be a temporary border, I dont want to put more than 20-30 dollars into the border. I looked at the black plastic roll out border, but its over a dollar a foot!

Any tips, ideas, suggestions, pics...........ANYTHING would be most appreciated.

Here's what I did one year. I dug a trench around the bed that was 8 inches deep. I lined the trench with newspaper and fill it with leaves. That worked very well - FOR ONE SEASON - at keeping the grass out of the bed and the edge neat, then I forgot to tend it. Total cost? ZERO!

I have used logs or limbs before from trees we have cut down. The neighbor cut down a cottonwood tree and I used the branches that were about 5 inches in diameter and took the bark off. It looked pretty cool. You just have to find some that are big enough to keep the dirt in and lay fairly flat on the ground.
