Hello! Still somewhat new to this forum, so I'll introduce my goat herd.
From left to right,
Bear, mostly black with a white poll spot, a Nubian/boar, so sweet, born in January, wethered.
Rika, brown with black tips and frosted ears, doeling, F3 mini Nubian.
Chester, black with spots and...
Currently, the only vaccine I am giving my herd is CDT and I am looking into the pneumonia vaccine and possibly rabies. I am interested in what other people are doing - why, age you give it, and how far apart you space it from other vaccines. If you are giving a live vaccine, please specify why...
Has anyone here used Bovi Sera?
Do you like it?
Why or why not?
Nobody I know uses it. I have been told that fortified vitamin b complex is actually a better immune booster than Bovi Sera. I have also heard that people don't want to use it because they don't know if it derived from clean...
Hello all! I got this goat bred in winter, and she kidded in January. Her condition was decent, not awesome, but not rescue either. I kept her well fed, and milked her fit several months. I noticed her getting a bit skinny, so i decided to stop milking.
Overall I have noted several issues I...
So, I'm a little confused- about half of what I read says to increase calcium intake during late pregnancy with alfalfa or perennial peanut to prevent hypocalcemia, and the other half says to only feed "regular" hay during late pregnancy because their body will "forget" how to get the extra...
I hope you enjoyed part 1 of 'Raising A Healthy Goat' ... now you can enjoy part 2

We got into goats a little over a year ago, and in our herd of 16, 6 (yes, 6) are bucks...:th:th:th
Unfortunately, only one is a good quality, registered buck (a Saanen). AND, there are two sets of pretty much identical twins...
Anyways, if I can get rid of the rest of the bucks, I can get a...
This morning, Almondine, my Saanen doe, had considerable milk reduction. She has had a cough for a couple weeks. Not sounding awful or wet, just coughing more than usual.
This afternoon, she got her CDT shot.
Later this afternoon, I noticed she was acting strange- wasn't very excited about the...
Anyone use this fence for goats/sheep. Would also be used to keep dogs and coyotes out. Thinking of using it along with a strand of barb wire along the top and the bottom. Five foot fence.......thoughts ?

I finally got my first two goats, I got one 9 week old female first. Obviously she was a little distressed to be alone, and she loved people, so she bonded really strongly to me. She was dam raised and always in a herd before I got her. The next day I picked up my OTHER goat, and only had her an...
Does anybody have experience with disbudding with local anaesthesia?
Any tips? How hard is it to get the nerve?
And yes, I know lidocaine can be very dangerous in the wrong amounts. We were going to use 1 ml 2% lidocaine with epinephrine diliuted with 3 ml of sterile water. Then divide that into...
Please name a poisonous plant to goats and post a picture to go with it. There are plenty of lists of plants poisonous to goats, but I have yet to see one with pictures.
1) Azaleas
Please post why or why not you think the polled goat gene is linked to hermaphrodicism. I have heard both claims and am interested in what other people know or think.
Thanks!
One of the Bucks has had a watery eye for maybe a month. His eye is not red or cloudy. What should I do? Does he need oxytrecaline? Maybe just allergies?
I just joined here at backyardherds. I currently have 5 goats. A Saanen, Mini Lamancha, little 10 week old Nubian, and a 8 week old LaMancha. Also, my little man, Nigerian Dwarf Buck, Yoda. ;)
We are making a big move soon to Texas. This should be interesting! :)
I have never had to stomach tube a goat, and hopefully won' t have to, but I really should know how. I have watched videos and read some articles, but if anyone has some tips I would love to hear them!
Do you aim for the left side of the throat?
Tennessee Meat Goats is probably the most helpful for me, then Fiasco Farms, although FF has some inaccurate information.
I have Goat Medicine, which is HUGE, but I wish it had more pictures and dosages.
What are some other great resources?
I have a Saanen FF who is giving 2 quarts a day.
I also have a FF Nigerian Dwarf who gives a quart a day.
Should I expect an increase in milk production in future years, or is that about as good as it will get?☺
