If his manure should get loose and a manure/whitish tint to them back off on the amount of milk replacer he is getting. It's not bad. Just means he is eating more grain and can do with less milk replacer.
Thanks, you 2. I will keep my eyes open for a whitish tint to his manure. Right now, it is a yellowish orangish.....lol My BIL was raised on a dairy farm and said that it looked "good." If calf/cow poop could ever look good, then I guess that it is now.....LOL
cow poop can drive you crazy!!!!! when i first started here, i think i drove farmer kitty nuttys about poop. But lol i can say with their advise, my poop probelm is in check!!!!! and the cows seem to be happy and I'm very happy!!!!!!!! lol
Well, I got my little bull drinking milk out of a pail. He was very hesitant the first time and wanted to keep head butting the pail and did spill some, but finally drank what was left. I am still having to stand next to him, to get him to stay there and drink. If I move, then he wants to move with me and I am afraid that he will go back to it and dump it over.
I know that he will get better at drinking out of the pail, the more that he does it. When I fed up this evening, then he stood at the gate and "cried" at me, wanting more milk. He drank it down so fast, that it did not have time to hit his stomach before he was finished...lol
My BIL says that drinking from the pail, they have more of a chance for them to get scours, because they drink it so fast. If this true? He drinks it very fast, in a bottle or a pail....lol
I will be watching for this, but I haven't even noticed poop in his pen at all. His pen is so full of hay, that maybe it is mixed in with the hay. I mucked his pen yesterday and didn't even notice/see any poop. It seems like it would be hard to miss, if it is still the same color as it was about 2 weeks ago.
Drinking from the pail won't give scours but, giving more liquid than he is ready for can. His sides should be filled out but, not overly filled out and hard.
Thanks. I am giving him the same amount in the pail as I was in the bottle, twice a day. He is also getting a little calf feed each day and I have caught him chewing on some hay every once in a while.
I am going to have to look at him closer tomorrow, in the daylight, but I don't find that his sides are all that filled out. I find that he looks too skinny...lol
His sides should be filled out after eating. He will have indented sides for a while yet. Once all four of his stomachs are working then his stomachs will be full of hay and grain and be filled out more.
Thanks Farmer Kitty. I did notice this morning that his sides were more filled out, after he gets done eating. When it is getting close to his second feeding, then his sides are indented quite a bit.
