2020 Farrowing Thread

Four babies for her first litter. Four babies for her second. Nine in her most recent..proud farmer right here! She is doing really well with them. Also the second piglet born is a hermaphrodite which ive never had before but from my research it isnt a big deal.

Your striped piglets are adorable as always. How are the pig sales? Are you still growing them off and selling the meat?

Red had 12 babies today. They are so flippin cute and precious. So I didn’t even realize she was in labor as nothing seemed off. She was eating, drinking, wallowing even and I hadnt found her lovely nest made of brush. After she came out of the wallow I decided to give her some belly rubs, as that way I could evaluate how close she was to having her babies. I checked her milk and determined she would be having her babies tonight, at least until i look by her tail and see toes coming out. She got annoyed at that and jumped up to stall her labor by eating. After awhile she did go off to her nest and got her show on the road. Several of the babies had swallowed some serious fluid and needed the good ol upside down swing to clear them out. I knew they were breathing well when the gurgles turned into screaming. Three are tiny and Im a little worried some of them may get squashed overnight but we will see.

Also the hermaphrodite baby died after it was a little over 24hrs old. I had a hunch there was something off with the urinary/digestive tracts. That seemed to be the case as the baby had an extremely swollen and bruised lower abdomen. Its sad but things happen.

Great! 9 & 12 are nice sized litters. We had an hermaphrodite rabbit....it thrived though. And didn't realize it until it was breeding age.

Lost the tiny firstborn this afternoon. I’m not sure what happened but he was very weak, and breathing raspy when I checked on him this morning. I think he may have been partially laid on, but I have no idea. He was unable to nurse with his siblings and barely had a suckle reflex so I brought him into the barn and put him under a heat lamp. He seemed to perk up some so i gave him a small bit of colostrum and waited for his reaction. He was able to pick his head up and was snorting a bit so i gave him more milk and after that he just crashed. I brought him back out to red to spend his last moments with his mama. It’s always sad to lose a baby but that’s nature for ya. The other 11 are doing well and Red is taking good care of her little ones. I built a makeshift hut to protect them from a storm last night and it worked really well. Other than that Maeja’s babies are doing well.

12 babies is a good litter. 11 surviving is great. Congrats on a nice litter of adorable babies!

i know that i'm late to the party but just had to say how much i love your baby piggie pictures. nice litters, hope everyone is still doing well.
