First off congrats on the new babies! Secondly, have you noticed the bucklings tongue and what position it is in when drinking? I had a doeling a few years that always positioned her tongue too far to one side and that made it hard for her to get a good suction. If not that then maybe he is more curious than hungry and he will eventually work his appetite up to where it needs to be. Good luck with him.

Hi redtailgal,

I got three new kids this month too. I am really sad to hear about Moma. Your post was quite entertaining and I feel for you with the time it takes to care for them. They sure are fun though. I tell mine they look like little pieces of popping popcorn out in the pasture that bucking, jumping, spinning and falling is precious.

Very fortunate all the kids were born, two from one Mom and one from the other, healthy. Two boys Simon and Garfunkle and one little princess, Bunny. I will post some photos. If you have some photos please post them, I would love to see your babies.

I am brand new at goating. The three adults, two females and a male were owned by someone who did not care for them at all. They were living in absolute filth and were lucky if he brought them some rotten bread. I brought them all to health and as a result the three kids are here and healthy.

We have coyotes here too. I was told they would not hunt the babies during the day. Is that true or should I keep them in the pen during the day. They are penned up with the Moms at night but out in the pasture all day with the Moms.

Looking forward to hearing from you and to seeing photos of your kids.

With Blessings, JeanJeannie :D

congrats!!! i would'nt offer them feed just yet if they are just a week old, I would set it out around 3 weeks of age, that and hay and fresh water. pretty soon you should be able to go to 20oz bottles 3 times a day, my dh bought 3 bore goats, that were just days old, and I'm having trouble with one not wanting to suckle that bottle, i feel when he gets hungry enough he will, yesturday i gave him some peditlite and baking soda just to get liguid in him. so good luck.!!!!!!!

No no no... MY goat babies will be the cutest... Once they're born! :p

I hope the molasses does the trick. Seems like you have an ADHD goat on your hands. :gig

Please, quick, change the title to this thread to get the attention of the more experienced goat people.... To something like, "Help, new baby goat won't eat, getting thin!" or something exciting like that. There is something wrong and you need to help him QUICKLY. Or PM Rollsfarm, Helmstead, EmmettsDairy, or any of the very experienced people.

I hope you get it figured out, please hurry. I wish I could help. I just know it is urgent if he doesn't have a little round, full tummy by now.

4pm feeding........

Piglet of course ravaged his bottle. slurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp and it was GONE. How such a little guy can suck it down that fast is beyond me.

The finnicky one now has a name. Spider (from my neice). He only drank two ounces and then was off to play. He latches on good, drinks for a minute and then he is off........I grabbed him and we tried some more, but he just wanted to play. I know he is hungry, he is very thin, I can tell his belly is empty. The other two are starting to round out a little, but not him. I think I will pull out the scale and start watching to see if he is gaining. If he is at least gaining, then I will just let him do it at his own pace.

I would give him baking soda, you can put it in his next bottle, but just mix a teaspoon with one ounce of milk to make sure he drinks it, Some people on her make baking soda balls(pea size) and put those on the back of their tongue to help with upset stomach, This should help within a few hours, I would repeat one more time, but if it doesn't help I would move on to another plan.

If he is constipated, give him corn syrup in the bottle, maybe molassas works, I am not familiar with this.

I would recommend a Bo-Se shot, do you have a vet in the area you can call, or goat people around. Bo-Se is a Rx. It is a Selenium-vit E shot

You could also do Probiotics, not Rx and vit B shots, also, not RX.

I would ask your friend who gave you the goats, if they have any of these things to treat the baby with.

Not getting colostrum is a possible problem, mom being sick may be also causing a problem with him.
