SO what all should I need to know?

We have had a couple cows/ steers before. We still have one steer Phillip who is officially a pet. Been wanting a Scottish highland so the opportunity arose and now in a few weeks we will be picking her up.

Any one want to chime in with Highland experience? Anything special I should do ? Need to get ?

Nervous wreck here :)

In no way a Highlander expert here, but I think you'll be just fine just as is. Just remember that transition into a new herd can be a little stressful for all animals, so if you can, maybe separate the new animal from the others for a while whilst they get used to each other and the new animal gets used to its new home. Then you can introduce them together and let them figure out for themselves who's boss. :) (Yes, there will be a little bit of fighting at first, but that's normal.)

Thank you Rose.

I am so very excited to get her. We do have a place to pen her up so she will be close to the top barn for a while. That way she can get use to us and the rest of the herd. And learn where we feed grain and treats.

The goats herd, Phil and E-Or, line up every morning in the same spot, get their treats and head off to the field to browse. Kinda cute :)

Hey porkchop - Highland are without doubt a beautiful animal to work with and for a strict grass fed opp they flourish too so that's something to consider - if not then don't overdo the grain to a breeding Highland.
It would help if you can tell us a little more like I'm assuming she comes with the tusks (lol horns) but more important is she registered and have you been to see her, is she halter trained and approachable.
At 7 months she will be ready to dance around at her new home when first off the truck so be prepared. Any thoughts on AI or can you run her with a Highland bull - it would be a shame to breed her to anything but a Highland bull saying that anything is better than nothing. We breed our Galloways from around 15 months but have waited as long as 24 months.
Some of the Highland breeders will hopefully come on here with more info oh and give you some tips on suitable hay feeders lol
Good luck anyway and a great choice of breed
