I was asking a cattle marketeer who worked for Nilsson Bros. here in Alberta about marketing cattle based on colour, and he said that prices didn't count according to what colour the animals were, no matter if they were roan Shorthorns or Angus cattle. Just so long as they were in healthy shape and in great condition, they would get a great price. Dairy cattle and those beefers that were sickly and in poor shape would be the ones that would go cheaper.

I read in a current Canadian Cattlemen Magazine article about CAB wanting to target Canada to try to encourage more producers to raise Angus cattle. The Chair was saying he had a goal of increasing the herd number of Black Angus cattle from 40% to 50-60%. It's a nice goal to go for, but there seems to be a lot of Albertans that like their Simmentals, Shorthorn, Hereford, Gelbvieh and Red Angus cattle, and that may take quite a bit to get Canadian producers to go black. But who knows? CAB has been pretty successful in America, not to mention in Australia, so I honestly wouldn't be surprised that, in the next 10 years, there may be a Canadian Certified Angus Beef program that becomes as popular as it has south of the border.
