We're going to attempt to reburn my nubian doeling's scur horns today. I've put it off hoping it would be something that could be popped off on occasion but the one side looks like it will likely curl back if we don't get it taken care of and I don't want her to get any bigger before we do it. She's four months old, and she was 2 weeks old when we burned originally, so there has definately been enough time in between. I've got a crew of strappin' guys set up to help hold her while I burn.

So my question, do you do it just like you were doing a bud? That is, are we aiming for a copper ring around it just like it were a bud? The one side is really, really tiny - smaller than the original bud was but the other side is sorta groing flat towards her head, that's the one that is most concerning for me.

Interestingly, the side that isn't growing much back is the side that we hit white on - freaked me out at the time, but it turned out to be the better side. The side that did grow back had what seemed like a good copper ring at the time.

Big thanks, in advance.

Doing a reburn is a big job and not for the faint of heart. We had our vet come out and do one for us. DH helped and he nearly fainted because he really held the iron on there for what seemed like forever.

Here is a great website that shows how to disbud a goat. Scroll down to a video showing how....

Good luck.

I've been to their website and actually corresponded by e-mail with them regarding disbudding - they have been a fabulous help to us with some unusual dis-budding issues. I have been so thankful that they have their blog set up - I've referred to it numberous times. I'm wondering, though, in particular, about scur horns. Are they treated the same way as far as HOW they are burned?

Our vet used our Rhinehart 50 disbudding iron and simply held it down over the existing spur in the same spot it had been burned before by my DH. He just held it on there till he could tell he was down to the skull. Now for sure, you don't want to go THRU
THE SKULL.

I hope all goes well, I sure don't envy you this job. I think the bucks are harder to do than the does.

I have got one goat with horns. I sure don't want any more. They do have an attitude when armed with those things.

I agree. Good luck. I have two bucklings that have scurs...and I am taking them to the vets next Monday to get reburned and scur removal surgically, but they are going under anestesia for it...they are 12 wks and it is very rough on them. :( I hate scurs !!!! :somad We never get em here cuz my husband does an excellent job....but our vet did them this year cuz my husband was injured...so here we are dealing with scurs!!

Hope it works out for you!!
