Hey Ya'll,

Looks like we made it through the. hottest. day. EVER... Those temps on Saturday were crazy ridiculous. We hit 108 at our house with heat index around 120ish. I spent most of the day outside keeping cool water in all the critters buckets and misting the critters (and myself!). Still lost one pullet... geeze. Thank goodness it's back to more reasonable temps this week. I even hope it rains on the holiday weekend - we NEEED it!

Rain would be fantastic. We got to 103 here, thankfully we didn't lose any critters.

Ash, I get the idea that you like white animals? Any story behind that?

Yes actually! I work late and don't get home sometimes till 11-1. I can just look for the brightest blobs in the pasture and coop to take headcount. I don't have to use a flashlight and wake everything up. Baaing goats at 1 am is not a neighbors idea of a lullaby.

Also they do better in the heat and the flies don't bother them as much.

I hear that. I had angora goat, which wasn't the brightest idea for my area, but I had colored and whites. Every summer the whites would still be grazing during the day while the black, red etc would all be tucked away in the shadows panting. So I slowly learned that the lighter color does better here.
