I am sure I will miss something, but we run 20 to 30 adults per year for the past 17 years, we kid out on average 20 does a year.
Boer and boer x Nubian crosses
- had one vaginal prolapse doe near the end of her gestation that repeated two years in a row and needed to be culled.
-had one doe that had a deformed birth canal and after 3 years of breeding her and 3 years of having to assist in her kidding we culled her.
-treat and deal wit coccidiosis every year, what a pain.
-never had a case of polio or listeriosis, that I am aware of.
-had one kid born with a cleft pallet, that was interesting, took us until he was 8 weeks old and several rounds of antibiotics to treat respiratory infections to realize the problem
-knock on wood, we have not lost a doe to kidding complications, but we do assist on average 1 out 5 or 6 does, so on a normal year we assist 4 or 5 does. keep I mind we are raising boer goats and with big kids often 10 to 12 lbs.
-we have lost 2 or 3 kids to over eating disease in the past couple of years, but over all it has not been a big problem for us. we kid out about 35 to 45 kids a year.
-out of a kid crop of 35 kids, I would expect to loose 1 or 2 kids between birth and 3 months of age, could be from parasites, could be an accident, like hanging in something, or getting smashed by a doe, Always seems to be some odd incident each year. Last year I went out and found two kids in a v of a tree, the bigger one on top the smaller one, the smaller one was almost dead, but I found him in time. That was weird, we have lost a couple to sticking their heads into something you would not think they could get their head into. and one time I had an adult doe run across the barn and smash into a kid and small him into a 4x4 post and kill him right in front of me, that was very odd. Not happy with that doe.
-barberpole worms: I have lost a handful of adult does over the years to anemia from worm loads in the summer, especially if they were nursing kids in the summer, we try not to have does nursing June to August for that reason.
-dont' have much problems with pneumonia, but I have lost a couple new born kids at the age of 3 or 4 days to what I am assuming was aspiration pneumonia.
-on average out of 20 does and 40 kids we will have 4 or 5 stillborns. Normally from sets of triplets.
-abortions should be addressed, they are more common that people think. many diseases that cause abortions on top of normal causes of abortions or a failure for the pregnancy to continue, obviously not all pregnancies are meant to be. But you should not have more than 1 out of your 10 does abort as a rule of thumb.

WOW...thank you for all that very useful info.
Shouldn't have does nursing in the summer months..that alone could and I'm sure will save someone trouble.
Aspiration pneumonia is something I would want to know more about..
Same with stillborns.....Kinders are known for having multiple births , 1 recording of 6 babbies, so maybe it will be something to realy study and understand. Just as assisting births.
If I had a goat that had problems with birthing , I would more apt to cull her as well.

This is all so wonderful....and dooly noted....:hugs THANKS !!!
