We have had a black bear here in Longwood, Florida kill about 10 chickens now, and has damaged three of my goat pens. He is trying to get my goats. :( Fish/wildlife won't do anything till we do some deterrants first for a couple of weeks. We are in the process of getting electric fencing, but Fish/wildlife said he has to be at least 3 wires high. Also they suggest motion sprinklers which I am having trouble finding them or a motion alarm. Not sure about the alarm cause they said if the wind blows right it will set it off. I just want this bear to leave us alone.

There is a great article in Goat Rancher Magazine this month (just got mine yesterday) about livestock guardians. They say the reintroduction of the wolf has changed the game here in the US and the Pyrs just aren't big enough to handle them. I suspect the bear would be close. There is a discussion about several of the larger breeds, including the Boz. There was also some recomendations for protective spiked collars for the dogs.

They said in the article there are only 10 Boz in the US, does that include yours Monster?

If you can't do a dog, then electric fence is your best option.

Our biggest problems are the dogs people let roam loose, including a few that are feral. The Pyrs can handle that with no problem.

I have doubts thinking an elec fence will stop a bear--they can handle all those 100s of bee stings without trouble at all--but I don't live in bear country.

I've had bear problems. Have a few posts on BYC too. My first suggestion is motion senser lights, a radio on talk radio, worn cloths that smell like human put up to look like a person is standing there. All first time modifications. Make sure anything that is food isn't accesable.

Next is hotwire. You need at least 6000 volts going through those lines. Bears will test hotwire and barge through if they dont feel the shock is big enough. From what I understand(and didn't do) do 5 strands. 3 are hot and the 2 lines in between are ground wires. Ever touched the ground wire and hot wire at the same time? OUCH! I was also told to hang a metal pie plate from a hanger on the wire, the second they go to eat it it shocks their mouth. Same as the bacon hung on the wire but I had too many cats to try it! and 8 ft grounding posts on the hotwire, more then 1 post, and I've even seen people do a few stations of grounding posts out farther along the fence on a big fenced areas.

I've also been told to smother a can of ether (starter fluid) with peanut butter or bacon grease and when he bites in and punctures the can he'll get quite the nasty mouthful. Tried this. The PB melted off after a few days and the bear never took the bait. oh and the ants attacked it.

The last 2 aren't things fish and game recommend but the lights, radio, and hotwire kept my bear out for about 2 months. Then he just barged right through the hotwire and we had to get a depridation permit.

My 'little' friend started coming around during the day and numerous times even after being scared away by 12 guage shots. I was inviting him in with chickens and chicken feed and anyone that says only a mama bear will kill for food is incorrect because this guy was definately a boy.

BYC post with pics of him.

Radio and our Stallions E-fence did little to discourage the grizzly we had once, lost over 165 birds to it and had to rebuild all my enclosures. F&W tried live and kill traps but the griz wasnt phased.

Shot it from less then 10 yrds distance since running at it screaming with gun flailing didnt even get it to pause in its tearing apart of a nother coop.... that was after 2 weeks of night watches trying to deter it.

A bear wants it it takes it, altho black bears are much easier to impress with electric and noise I think. Had a curious bb sow this spring I met hunting out in the bush and she would not leave me alone and kept following at a 20 yrd distance(not agressive, just nosy is all)...... after a while I had enough and stomped at her making angry bear huffing noises, 15 yrds was too close for her comfort and she went up a tree to hide from the stomping growling and huffing two legged beast

Redtailgal, This dog is actually the father to one of my pups. He still lives in Turkey ;(
The Boz Mature slow physically, and my pups are not as visually impressive "YET"
Here are some pictures of my pups. 9 months old for the female, and 10 months old for the male. I have heard comments about their being SKINNY. Let me tell you, they lack for nothing, are wormed, food out 24/7, get plenty of exercise. Just part of the breed. Plus, to allow them to grow to rapidly would cause potential for bone and joint issues.

Did not mean to hiJack the trhead. This is one breed that would have the speed, strength, skill, and drive to confront a Bear,,,, and survive. Plus have the intelligence and agility to know how to stay out of the bears mouth. In Turkey, they defend against Wolves and Bear (Smaller Black Bear). Several of them would make a good team

I LOVE the Bacon and Hot Wire trick. Have done the same for neighbors dogs and coyotes. Some saddistic satisfaction comes from watching a dog that killed a bunch of your stuff grab a mouth full of REVENGE!!!

You need to get it on Video the next time you go out to throw rocks at a BEAR, would make a viral youtube video. Or evidence against you in a sanity hearing,,,haha.

Good luck,, I am glad it is Coyotes that I have to worry about,,, not Bear.
Actually, that depends. To be honest, our little 30lb Australian cattle dog could get rid of a black bear>> Sure, she cant kill it, but its sorta like having a wasp fly ALL around uss annoying us, and then biting us every now and then. Its fast and can be hard to get (tho not impossible) but I will admit, I would run off rather then squash it. Our little fire cracler (the dog, LOL) is annoying, trust me, and a black bear would be worth sacraficing herself need be (Shes extremely loyal) , So, yes a boz or a pyr. will do good at detterring a bear, unless you want to KILL it, then you wont need a pack (at least based off the pictures ive seen of them!! :ep :gig )

Do you know the species of the bear? Black bear i guess, grizzlies tend to run off from humans. See if WF&G will kill the bear, problem bears they usually have to kill, but if your in the wooded country they might relocate it. As for dettering it, keep ALL food locked up, not a SINGLE piece of it out w/ your not there, or at least anyone isnt there (if possible! :) ) Then try the hotwire trick, but put ANOTHER fence all around the one fence you have, and load it up with hotwire :)

Its actually pretty cool to see a bear in person so long as its not coming TO you or to your ANIMALS!! Closet Ive ever been to one is roughly 10 yards, it was fishing <3 awesome moment!!

ETA- nope, your dogs are not thin at ALL. My friend mushes dogs (so do i but she owns them :p ) and people always say "Your dogs are soo thin, why are you starving them?" or somethin like that  Im sorry if we dont WANT 300 lb huskies, or in your case, a 50 lb beagle

It's to bad a dog isn't an option in your opinion. Since they probably would be your best bet. I would also contact your local fish and game. Problem bear will often relocated or "taken care " of.
