I would definitely call an AI technician. If they are close by, the cost should be about $15.00 or less per insemination plus trip fee plus the cost of the semen. They will often have several bulls for you to choose from, and they will help you figure out a way to "synchronize" your cattle so they may be bred within a close (if not same day) time frame. Using lutalyse and CIDRs, you could have all the cows "come in heat" at the same time to save $$ on a technician call. Many dairy farms even use a complete synchronization (ovsynch) and time breed...the cows do not even show heats.

Buying a bull for a small number of cows would be costly, even at a pound or stockyard price. And, you have to feed him all year, or at least while you are breeding cattle.
