Hi there! We may begin raising some meat rabbits, probably Californians. If we decide to purchase, rather than build, their housing, can anyone recommend a generously sized, well-built cage/hutch? These would be outside rabbits. I'm thinking of starting with two does and a buck. We can't afford to waste money on something ridiculously priced, but want good quality and will pay for something that is sturdy and will last forever. Please share your experiences. Thank you.

No cage lasts forever but for meat rabbits an all wire cage is the best. Most people use 1X2 wire but if you intend to breed I prefer 1/2X1 so the young won't be able to squeeze out. The floor of the cage can be 1/2X1 for the older rabbits. The manure drops easily through. For younger ones 1/2X1/2 is abetter floor so their small feet won't go through.
Wire cages are easily built using J clips but if you only want a few cages Kluberance is probably the best source.
Their cages come precut but knocked down so you have to put them together yourself. It's a simple task.

Do what we did. I dont regret it and there isnt one thing that I would have changed. We built a 8'x4' hutch than divided it into 2'x4 cages so I have 4 cages total I built 2 hutches the same way. I used 1/2 inch hardware cloth for the floor and the bottom. It gives the rabbits ton of space and you can fit a nesting box in their cags without squishing them. And if you do this you wont have any scrap wood. If you use 2"x4"s. Hope this helps.
