hey guys, I was sitting in the pasture today feeding oatmeal cookies to my new calf and I noticed her right eye has a blue area onin it. It almost looks like a cataract starting or something. It is not something like a foreign object, it appears to be intrinsic in the eye. It is about the size of a dime. Does anybody know what this is and do I need to start worrying yet?

Thanks for any help.... I can't believe it is day 4 with new moo and already a possible health concern.

Ok, I got this pic and you can see the blue spot in the eye. This was in the shade. I thought with pink-eye you would see drainage and possibly swelling of the eye orbit (Imma people nurse, whadda I know about Moo eyes)

Any way, thank you. I actually have sterile opthalmic antibiotic salve for my horse. I maintained the sterile integrity so I am not worried about the med being dirty. It is Tobramycin opthalmic ointment, think it is ok to use? And boy, she is gonna love me

Do you have a picture of it?

It could be something to not really worry about, as it could've been the way the light shone into the eye that made it look like it was something to worry about.

I would check her in different lighting and see if it is still there. Is the blue spot cloudy? Or clear? If it is still there.

the blue spot was definitely cloudy, looked opaque maybe. I took several pictures but it didn't seem to show up in it. I'll try again.

Well, she at least got up real close to me for the cookies. I was thoroughly sniffed. The really funny part was my BR roo had to come out and check what I was doing, and everytime the calf got really close to me, he let out a warning scream like there was a hawk or something.

I'm wondering about pinkeye. There are meds you can get to put into her eye. If it is pinkeye, and left untreated, she very likely will loose her sight in that eye.

Now that I see it I think it's just the light that's playing tricks on you. Personally I don't see anything to be worried about.

However, maybe you should have a vet look at it. Just to be real certain.

I'm still leaning toward pinkeye with it being cloudy. If it were just a trick of the light you should see it sometimes and not others.

Not familiar with the ointment you have but read the label. It should say if it will work with pink eye or not.

yes, it is indicated for conjunctivitis (pink eye) . Now just how am I going to get this in her eye? She is just barely letting me touch her nose, she actually followed me around the field today, so I think we are making progress. :)

If my dh and I rope her to catch her, are we going to scare her into never coming near us again?

ETA, you guys are really the nicest group of helpful people.. I had said earlier I needed a crash course in cowology and I have made a nice start just by reading the posts and links here... Kudos , Miss Kitty, thank you so much for being out here.....

Do you feed grain or some sort of treat? If so, maybe when you have her caught give her a little extra. Maybe a little spoiling will help counter act the being caught.
