I have a 18 mo. old Fullblood Boer buck, that can not extend his penis out of his sheath.
This past summer he developed urinary crystals, and was treated successfully. By that I guess I mean he didn't die and he hasn't had them since! :)
So, this fall when I put him in with a couple of in heat girls he did his wha wha wha and bred them but was not extended at all. We watched over a couple of days and he never did. 21 days later or so the girls cycle again. Same story, wha wha wha, breed, no extension.
I have felt up inside, no crystals, and the opening is large enough for my pinkie to go up in to.
What is going on? Is it likely he is no longer able to breed? When he urinates it is a steady stream.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,
SC

The only thing I'd know to do would be to sit him on his rump and try to externalize him manually...might at least give you some clue as to where the malfunction's occurring.

Thanks, I have tried scratching him on his back in that "special" spot and he still did not.
I guess that I will have to load the big guy up and take him to the vet.

Okay, We took a trip to the vet, and with a little "encouragement" to extend he could not. The vet did an examine during the "encouragement" and he said he did not have an erection and his testicles was to small for his age and size. So it could be an hormone issue, but he will never be able to breed him unless we collect what drips out and AI.
He could be a wonderful teaser buck for someone. With only 6 does I can not justify him staying here. But after having him for so long it will be hard seeing him go.

This is why a Breeding Soundness Exam can be a excellent investment. I got mine done for $45 from one vet and $50 from another.

Check with the breeder you bought him from. For a fullblood, good breeders will guarantee the buck can produce kids and replace him if he cant.

We bought him when he was 4 mo. old, and he now 18 mo old. He did breed one doe when he was less than a year old.
I never thought about contacting the breeder. I figured after we had him this long it was kinda our loss at this point.
Since we only have a few does we will probably just pick out bucks for each doe to enhance or improve the features we want.
