Hello - sorry if this is too long!
We brought home a little nigerian male yesterday. The breeder had banded him an hour or so before we picked him up. He then had a 2 1/2 hour ride in my car (he did really well in the car), and then was brought home to two other wethered males that about 3 weeks older than he is. Upon introductions he (the new guy) reared up and proceeded to head butt with the "top" goat and then after the top guy established dominance he and the #2 guy went at it off and on for several hours.
Today everything seems to have sorted itself out as far as a pecking order.
I am noticing today that he is a little less perky and it was very hot today and I did not witness him drink or urinate. To be fair I was gone most of the day but the half hour I was in the goat pen I witnessed the other two drink and urinate. He did sniff the water and then walked away. He is eating his hay and grain.
So I gave him water in a bottle with a nipple. He drank it with gusto and about 20 minutes later he peed. Both testicles appear to be in the band and the band doesn't seem too high. The breeder also gave him a shot of banamine to help fight any infection.
My questions are:
#1 - should I continue offering water from the bottle? Is there any harm in doing this? If there is no harm in it, can you continue to give them water on occasion from a bottle as adults in case you wanted to give the extra fluids on hot days?
#2 - I got our other goats banded 3 days prior to picking them up and I was told I just needed to wait for them to drop off. Is there anything I need to do or should not do for this little guy since it is so fresh?
#3 - is his behavior normal for a newly transported and banded little goat?
Thank you so anyone that can answer my questions or provide any other info that I may have not thought of.
Nicole - a very nervous and paranoid new goat mom (we originally came home with three - the one that belonged to my 6 yr old had pneumonia the next day and then kept going downhill and even with good vet care he passed away 10 days after we brought him home this new one is her "replacement" - so needless to say I'm terrified of anything that is abnormal)
