Hi there! We added a new member to our backyard herd yesterday : an intact Nubian buck. We have seven wethers among a few other species. We were told the buck is 2 years old. He was kept as an only goat for the last six months. My question is, do bucks always stink or only around females? This guy hasn't been handled much, so I made, then cancelled, an appointment to get him banded. He has no stink whatsoever, and I don't want to put him through banding unless there's a problem.

Thanks for any help!

Holly

Here's Jelly Roll. He was a little excited first meeting everyone.

Bucks stink during rut. Many don't have a big offensive odor otherwise, esp dairy, IMO. The stinkiest I've ever encountered was a pygmy buck. Let me just say, it was worse than my Boer, Nubian & Saanen put together! Little guy, huge stink.

So no girls, not rut, no testosterone -- it won't be too stinky. Especially if bathed on occasion. ☺️

Thank you! That explains a lot.

He is stinking now because August through January is rutting season for Nubians. They have the longest breeding seaason of any dairy breeds.

When we had our dairy goats we kept about 5 bucks. They smelled during rut and after breeding season ended we bathed them with pig odor killer shampoo and shaved off all the areaas where they peed on themselves. Kept them sweet until rutting season began again.

This guy's stink is becoming unbearable. We plan to have him castrated by our vet when fly season ends. He's about three years old. Will castrating at this age end the bucky behaviors?
