Hello everyone!

We are just dipping our toes into the meat rabbit world, and are making do with what we have! We currently have a Giant Chinchilla cross doe and a Rex Buck. (11 weeks) I am looking to get a second doe to create a meatier cross, and wanted to know what breeds you would consider.

The resulting cross would be Rex cross... I KNOW, not the picture perfect meat rabbit breed, but I heard they make decent crosses when crossed back to a meat rabbit type. I live in rural, northern NH, and the selection is small. What breeds should I keep my eyes open for? I'm thinking probably New Zealand, Californian... anything else?

Thanks!
(here's a picture of the new, young Bachelor :D =D)

I have NZ and California..yes, they are both great for meat. And pretty colors too, so you could sell some too for pets. My rabbits get to about 7,8,9,10 lbs...but, it depends on how long you want to keep them around before you butcher. Definitely pick a doe who gets big to keep for a breeder...she’ll likely have large litters and larger kits. I breed for color..so doing a cross gives lots of option of size and, from what I’ve heard, taste too, like crossed pigs. Like a Cali and NZ cross.

I would definitely look for some New Zealands. A solid colored doe since your buck is broken. You can find them in all sorts of colors other than white!View attachment 71556

Found a Black New Zealand/ Rex Cross and a California Doe for my boy :) The NZ/Rex mom was steel tipped, and you can kind of see some silver flecks on her side. She's about 12 weeks and 4.5 lbs
