Hmmm...that makes me wonder. Maybe the stress of the move killed off his male sperm. Something to think about. I say this since I have read that the male sperm is more weak and dies away fast. Just a theory of mine....lol as I know nothing.20kidsonhill said:We ended up with 32 kids, and only 8 does out of them. Ugh. So frustrating. One of the bucks I used was sold right after we used him and went to another farm. They have 4 does. He bred the minute we took him over there. 152 days later 2 of the 4 does kidded and then the other two kidded with in the next couple of days.
Get this, they had 8 kids, 7 of them does. Seriously. Are you kidding me???
I thought it was the opposite, female sperm die off easier and male sperm live longer. If you use a buck for a lot of breedings in a row the first kids are supposed to be more females and the kids later in the group are more males. That is what I herd. I have never seen it in my goats. It was cooler when we took him over, and when we bred it was really really warm. Several people in our area had low numbers and a ton of bucks from their january/February kiddings. But I had 4 does bred the same week as their 4 does on my farm to another buck and we only got 6 kids total, 2 does and 4 bucks. So the cooler weather theory didn't seem to help me any.Jewls819 said:Hmmm...that makes me wonder. Maybe the stress of the move killed off his male sperm. Something to think about. I think you might be right. My buck was used on a few outside does before I used him this year. They had 11 kids total and 11 were does. 2 of my goats kidded and I had 1 single buckling, and then triplets-1 doe and 2 bucks.20kidsonhill said:I thought it was the opposite, female sperm die off easier and male sperm live longer. We have never had a year were we had more bucks than does born, or as many singles, so I guess 1 year out of 15 isn't that big of a deal.. We still got 32 kids and they are really nice and doing well and sold well. 32 kids from 20 does, those numbers are kind of low. I would really expect 40 kids from 20 does. I was hoping to have 45 kids total this year to sell. I have two does left to kid.
Sorry that was a bit like babbling.
Hope next year we have lots of does. We are going to try putting vinegar in the water this year.
