Buying a certain breed

It is sad. The whole bigger is better mentality and poor price per hundred weight has created a lot of this.

We have 10 year olds milking out every bit as well as much younger cows.

You can call me soft or what ever you like, but I could never run many of the dairies I have been in.

i could run a big dairy.but it would be run for the cows comfort.an not trying to burn her up on milk production.an try to keep her online as long as she can produce.

I was in a big dairy that was strickly family run. Nothing gets bought without having the money in the bank account. No loans. They have tiled their land. Equipment works good. New milking parlor. Their cows do well. We were there on a class trip with Kute Kitten and one cow had a bloody nose. I pointed it out to one of the guys and he knew about it. They had been dealing with her for a couple of days-vit. shots mostly. Other big farms I've seen would have just left her.

I think on a family owned and run farm, cattle do better than these big farms that hire help. Part of it is due to the family owned one is only going to do what they can handle. The one with the hired help has a problem finding good help and the opinion tends to be, I need to put more cows on so the check is bigger so I can do/get this or that. Then the help quits and moves on and they have trouble keeping up.

It is pretty basic right now. I have tons to add.

We are actually going to be running basic cow care, milking, and possibly cheese making classes later this year.
